Friendships - Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Friendships - Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Just like in real life, characters need friendship. In series, these can be human or even fictional friendships. Time to explore these friendships further.
Sometimes the most special friendships arise in series. These can be friendships that you as a viewer experience as a feast of recognition, but they can also be the most surreal friendships. All kinds of emotions can pass by in a friendship. Whatever emotion it is, as a viewer you will empathize even more with the experiences of your favorite characters. When the idea for this column came to me, I quickly noticed that friendships can be discovered in almost every series. For the first edition, I will focus on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

We start with a touching friendship between main characters Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg, Cuckoo) and Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero, Blockbuster). Jake is a very talented but childish detective. He is the joker of the district. He is constantly pulling pranks and making jokes at the expense of his colleagues. Despite everything, he has the highest arrest rate in the district. You cannot find a greater opposite in the form of Amy. She is the opposite of what Jake stands for. She strictly adheres to the rules, can get worked up about everything and does not like to make jokes. She is constantly working her way up to Commander Holt. Due to their character traits, they regularly get on each other's nerves. On the other hand, it is also what binds them together. If you are an experienced series viewer, you can guess how their mutual relationship develops, but it started with their rivalry that deep down meant a close friendship.

Next in line is the friendship between Jake and Commander Raymond "Ray" Holt (Andre Braugher, The Good Fight). This friendship is perhaps one of the most beloved aspects of the series. Holt is known for his robotic way of speaking and on the outside his facial expression shows no emotion whatsoever. You guessed it: the serious and strict Holt initially has no time for the playful and unconventional Detective Jake. Holt hopes that Jake will fail because of his strict policy and that he can get rid of him. However, no matter how unorthodox Jake is, he almost always successfully completes an arrest. This is to Holt's great annoyance, but secretly he can appreciate it. As the series progresses, Holt becomes a kind of father figure to Jake. Especially because Jake himself has a difficult relationship with his own father. The highlight is the annual Halloween episodes where a championship is held. The rivalry is evident, which leads to hilarious and heartwarming moments.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

A touching friendship is that between Jake and Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio, Reno 911!). In the series, they are not only colleagues, but also best friends. Charles adores Jake and is actually his biggest fan. Jake, on the other hand, regularly makes fun of Charles, but he doesn't care. Together they form a hilarious duo with their quirky adventures and inside jokes, such as their "No Look Five" high-fives. When they go undercover together, they come up with extensive background stories for their undercover characters. In addition, Charles sometimes tends to go too fast when it comes to relationships. Jake tries to protect him by teaching Charles to control himself and not to rush everything. Because of this, in addition to the jokes and pranks, you also see the deep bond they have. Their friendship is a mix of humor, loyalty and unconditional support.

There are more friendships to mention, but I would like to conclude with the duo Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller, Big Love) and Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker, Baa Baa Black Sheep). Scully and Hitchcock are a couple of lazy, somewhat perverted and slightly simple detectives. They have been working for the police for over thirty years, where they are now winding down. Together they like nothing better than to sit in their chairs all day and then eat various delicacies. Scully is known for his many medical ailments, including frequent heart attacks. Hitchcock occasionally tries to seduce a young lady. Is the duo important to the story? No, but they make sure you laugh every episode.

Reading this column, the friendship between Ted Lasso and Rebecca Welton immediately came to mind. Rebecca is the new owner of the AFC Richmond football club and hires Ted as an inexperienced football coach as part of her plan to sabotage the club in order to get revenge on her ex-husband, who had invested a lot of money in the club. Gradually, however, Rebecca falls for the optimistic Ted and mutual respect, trust and a deep friendship develop. I also had to think of Jimmy Laird and grumpy Paul Rhoades in Shrinking. Jimmy has his own unique method of therapy, while Paul, the old hand in the business, does everything by the book and does not understand and disapproves of Jimmy's way of working. But of course the ultimate friendships are in Friends: Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe (and especially Chandler and Joey), although during the series they became more like "two couples and two others" (Joey and Phoebe).

It's nice to read that the column evokes things in you. In addition, the examples you mention are beautiful. When I submitted this, I later thought that the title Friends could also have been the perfect kick-off. Both figuratively and literally, given the title :) On the other hand, we have something to look forward to again.

Funny column and nice idea to write something about it! Very cool to think back to all the great comedy series I've seen. There are always a few characters that stick with you.

I immediately thought of the friendship between JD and Turk from the series Scrubs. One of the earlier, and in my opinion the best, comedy series I have seen. I have not seen that friendship equaled in any series.
I can still remember the friendship between Doug and Deacon from The King of Queens and also the friendship between Hank and Britt from the series Terriers. All great series, largely because of their friendships.

It's strange that we immediately think of friendships from comedy series.
