Spotlight On: Charlie Cox

Spotlight On: Charlie Cox

Lights off, spotlight on! Time to see which series Charlie Cox also has on his resume.
Disney knows what to do with superheroes. That has been very clear since they took over the MARVEL universe. One person mentions thinking ahead on a large scale, another talks about the cow and how it can be milked until the very last drop. Charlie Cox has also been involved in this for a while. And now it's time for the next step.

Cox, a British actor born in the winter of 1982, first appeared on the small screen in 2002. Judge John Deed marks his series debut. Still, it takes a while before Cox reappears. Although he took on some small film roles, it was not until 2006 that he guest-starred in the British police series Lewis. Certainly not a bad move for an up and coming actor.

After a number of more films and years, Cox returns to the world of series for the third time. This time a guest star in the worldwide famous Downton Abbey manages to seduce him. With the miniseries Moby Dick (2011), Cox takes on a more prominent role. The fact that he is making an impression is evident from his next commitment.

Not long after Moby Dick (2011), Cox starred in Boardwalk Empire, the critically acclaimed political gangster epic by Terence Winter. The HBO series runs for five seasons and is showered with awards. Cox portrays Owen Sleater, an Irish immigrant who works for the IRA and does criminal odd jobs.

After starring in The Theory of Everything a few years later, Cox really started to stand out in the film and television world. This does not go unnoticed by the people behind the superhero genre. That's why he was cast in 2015 as one of the most complex superheroes: Marvel's Daredevil.

Daredevil tells the story of Matt Murdock, a lawyer who becomes blind at a young age due to a mysterious accident. However, his other senses are miraculously enhanced, allowing him - with the necessary martial arts training - to become a crime fighter with extraordinary skills in Hell's Kitchen, New York. Marvel's Daredevil ultimately managed to last three seasons on Netflix.

However, that is not the end for Cox, nor is it for his character. Daredevil already makes his entrance in The Defenders during his own series, where he works with Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Four loners with the same goal: rid New York City of evil.

After Daredevil, Cox ventures into other series. Relics and Rarities welcomes him only briefly, but the series Kin (2021) offers him a new leading role. This Irish crime series follows a gang war that erupts after a boy is murdered by an international cartel. His family obviously wants revenge. During this period Cox can also be seen in the miniseries Treason.

In the film Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cox reprises his role as Daredevil earlier than expected. A year later, he reprises that role in the much-discussed She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. This will be followed by Echo and – in early 2025 – Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Now it is once again up to Disney to give Daredevil the leading role in his own series again, after Netflix: Daredevil: Born Again. The series builds on the story of the streaming competitor. This means that in addition to Cox, well-known faces such as Vincent D'Onofrio (Kingpin) and John Bernthal (Punisher) will return.

Daredevil: Born Again can be seen on Disney+ from March 4. Not yet tired of the determined fighter that Cox portrays? Then you better sit ready once the new Daredevil arrives on Disney+!
