The Jack Reacher book series by Lee Child follows the adventures of Jack Reacher, a former major in the U.S. Army. After his service, Reacher roams the United States, often getting into dangerous situations and solving crimes. Jack Reacher is a loner and a righteous man who often comes into conflict with criminals and corrupt individuals. He has a strong moral compass and uses his military training and intelligence to solve problems. Each book is a self-contained story, although there are ongoing story elements and recurring characters. The stories range from murder mysteries to conspiracies to personal vendettas. Lee Child is known for his tight, fast-paced writing style and detailed descriptions of battle scenes and tactics.
The book series now has 29 books. Enough source material to draw from. Before the series came into being, there were film producers who made two Reacher films. Of course, the series deserves all the attention, but it is interesting to consider the reason why the films never really caught on with fans of the book series. The lead role was played by Tom Cruise and the films were successful at the box office. However, the films received mixed reactions and this was mainly about the casting. A common criticism was that Tom Cruise does not physically match the description of Jack Reacher in the books. Reacher is described as a large, imposing man, while Tom Cruise is relatively small. In addition, the films could never match the depth and complexity of the book series.
Enough reason to give the potentially great source material a second chance. This time in the form of a series. In 2022 it was time. The series Reacher saw the light of day, in which the main character is played by a fantastic Alan Ritchson. When he was cast, I had my doubts whether he could carry a series like this. I mainly know him from the series Blue Mountain State, in which he does not exactly play an action hero. In retrospect, I can say that his casting was a bull's eye. He already had the big body and muscular body, of course, but he managed to express this fact in combination with the character traits of Jack Reacher surprisingly well.
The series has everything that the films lacked. Reacher closely follows the storyline of the first book, The Killing Floor, where Jack Reacher ends up in the town of Margrave and gets involved in a murder investigation. The series stays true to the source material. The main plot points and twists from the book are well represented in the series. In addition, Reacher manages to convey the atmosphere and tension of the books well. The action, the mystery and the character development are all elements that fans of the books will recognize. The series takes more time to tell the story. This allows the creators to go into more detail and work out the background of the characters and events in a worthy way.
Reacher does a great job of doing justice to the source material. Three seasons have been released and the fourth season is on its way. Reacher is considered a successful and faithful adaptation of the book series and I can only agree. Alan Ritchson doesn't just play Jack Reacher, he is Jack Reacher!
