From Paper to Screen - Slow Horses

From Paper to Screen - Slow Horses

There are countless stories published in books. How beautiful it is that these beautiful stories are brought to life. It is time to highlight these book adaptations.
I know that people can get completely absorbed in an exciting or gripping book. A book can appeal to the imagination and you can let your own fantasies run wild. Countless stories have already been put on paper and many more will follow. It is admirable how writers can translate their ideas and fantasies into an all-encompassing book. I have to admit that I am not much of a reader myself. That may sound strange for someone who writes columns as reading material, but I am more of a visually oriented person. That is why book adaptations offer a good solution. It is fantastic to see how a beautiful story can be transformed into an equally beautiful series. In this second edition, I will talk about the book adaptation Slow Horses, based on the Slough House book series by Mick Herron.

Slow Horses

The Slough House book series by Mick Herron revolves around a group of MI5 agents who have been relegated to a department called Slough House. These agents, known as the 'Slow Horses', have made mistakes or otherwise fallen from grace within the service. They are placed under the leadership of the cynical and often uncouth Jackson Lamb. Each book in the series is a self-contained story, often involving a mix of espionage, intrigue and political conspiracy. The agents of Slough House find themselves involved in a variety of dangerous situations and must use their skills to survive and uncover the truth. The books often contain a combination of humour, suspense and sharp social observations, which sets them apart from traditional spy novels. The book series has been highly acclaimed by both critics and readers, and has been praised for its original approach to the espionage genre.

The popularity and positive response makes this book series attractive material for a television adaptation. Will Smith, the creator of the series and not the rapper, saw potential in the books and worked with Mick Herron to bring the storylines and characters to the screen. Mick Herron was involved in the process and provided input to ensure that the essence of the books was preserved. In 2022, the first season of Slow Horses premiered and the seasons follow each other in rapid success. Due to the overwhelming success, four seasons have now been released and the fifth and sixth seasons are on their way.

Slow Horses

The success of the series is certainly due to the great source material. Nevertheless, there is one more big reason for it. The fabulous performance of Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, who probably plays the role of his life. Lamb wants to make sure that you are as unmotivated as possible in the office. The moment he first appears on screen you see an unkempt man, holes in his socks, drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. He is derogatory towards his colleagues with statements such as "you are the lowest point of my career" and "if you are still in the office after work then I have not done my job properly". Behind this melancholic and sarcastic man lies an extremely capable MI5 agent. He can see situations and actions of both enemies and allies coming from miles away. He knows how to deal with these situations in his own unorthodox ways.

The series Slow Horses remains largely faithful to the book series by Mick Herron, but there are some significant differences and adjustments made to make the story more suitable for television. While the first season of the series closely follows the first book, Slow Horses, the later seasons take more creative liberties. Some storylines and events are changed or added to give the series more tension and continuity. The series expands the backgrounds and relationships of some characters. Additionally, the series retains the dark and cynical tone of the books, but adds visual action and dramatic elements that enhance the viewing experience.

Mick Herron, the author of the books, has indicated that he is pleased with the adaptations that have been made for the series. He has even contributed to some of the changes and emphasizes that the essence of the characters and the tone are preserved. Partly because of this, Slow Horses is seen as a successful and faithful adaptation of the book series and I can only agree with this.

Slow Horses is a series that has been on my list for a while. Interesting cast, and I was also completely captivated by Spooks ten years ago, and this seems to tie in very well with that.

Wonderful series with a wonderful role by Gary Oldman. As you already indicated, Pascal, Oldman plays the role of his life in this. The umpteenth gem of Apple TV+, which has become one of my favorite streaming services. I hope for many more seasons of this Slow Horses.

Everyone here raved about this series, so I gave it a try. But tastes clearly differ, because I stopped after one episode. I really didn't like it at all. I had the same thing with The Bear, so it must be me.

For me, besides the cast, led by Gary Oldman, Slow Horses excels in dry, dark humor and sharp dialogues. The espionage genre is not blindly followed, but rather dissected and turned upside down. Where many series focus on spectacle and major threats, Slow Horses opts for realism: clumsy mistakes, internal politics and human weakness form the real danger here. I am already looking forward to what is yet to come.

Completely agree, but also read the books, if possible, the original English versions
