Series of the Year 2025 - Nominations for Best Ended Series of 2025

This column supports the Series of the Year Awards 2025, focusing on the Best Ended Series category. From Monday, January 5 to Sunday, February 8, you can vote for your favorite series in this and many other genres.
The fun part about writing for this category is that the list looks different every year. A series can technically only end once. However, in recent years, there have been two series in this category that received a new season after being nominated here. I'd love to hear from you which ones you think they were.

This year, we have a diverse list once again. We have fantasy, animation, drama, science fiction, and more. What's striking is that quite a few series on this list stopped in December last year and not in 2025 itself. But due to the date on which we have to submit the nominations, we are including them.

Below, in alphabetical order, are the top ten nominees for best-ended series of 2025:

1923

1923
Taylor Sheridan is a main supplier for the streaming service SkyShowtime. What began with Yellowstone (2018) has grown into an entire television universe around the Dutton family's ranch. 1923 follows the family business as it was a hundred years ago. It was a tough time, with prohibition and the first signs of the great economic crisis. These struggles are well depicted, and with two stunning lead roles from Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, you're always in good hands.

Andor

Andor
A prequel to a prequel. Who would have thought that could work? And in the Star Wars universe, no less? But it works excellently. Andor is set in the years before the film Rogue One, which in turn ends where the original Star Wars trilogy began. Instead of heroes wielding lightsabers and using The Force, we see a raw political drama full of morally gray characters where spaceships are secondary. It's completely different from most Star Wars films and series, yet it still breathes Star Wars.

Bosch: Legacy

Bosch: Legacy
The first spin-off of Bosch had a shorter run than the original series, but it still contained the same qualities. Harry Bosch remains a wonderfully stubborn detective, the series still has a delightfully gritty atmosphere, and the murder cases are still intriguing to watch. Although Bosch: Legacy has run its course, this is not the case for the various new spin-offs that have already been announced or are in development.

The Dragon Prince

The Dragon Prince
"From the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender." A label many series would love to have. The Dragon Prince has that label. The story about conflicts between humans, different types of elves, dragons, and mages, like Avatar, showcases a fascinating world with sometimes surprisingly mature themes. Although the ending leaves enough room for a possible continuation, it has had an impressive run of seven seasons.

The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale
Under His Eye. When the series adaptation of Margaret Atwood's book first aired in 2017, it was remarkably topical in the then-political climate. The sixth and final season also carries that current and urgent storyline. It's raw, excellently acted, and depicts a sinister future that might be closer than we think. Although June's story has now been told, a sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, The Testaments, has already been announced, showing how things will continue in Gilead.

Marvel's What If...

Marvel's What If...?
The first animated series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel's What If..., was immediately a special one. It told a series of what-if stories and showed how. What if not Steve Rogers, but Peggy Carter became a super-soldier? What if Dr. Strange had a different motivation to learn magic? What if the Avengers did not succeed in defeating Ultron? The stories are creative, funny, and sometimes surprisingly emotional. With three seasons, it was wonderful, although I personally would have loved to see more episodes like this.

The Sandman

The Sandman
The Sandman is a legendary comic and the dream of various studios to adapt. Ultimately, it became a series on Netflix, where we follow the adventures of the god of dreams while devils, demons, and other gods threaten his realm and the human world. It offered a glimpse into a fantastical world where nothing was as it seemed. Although only two seasons were made, this is a true must for fantasy enthusiasts.

What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows
The funniest vampires of Staten Island can finally participate in this category. For six seasons, we saw in What We Do in the Shadows how vampires Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin, along with their guardian Guillermo, dealt with both vampire affairs (sucking blood, turning into bats, and waging war with werewolves) and housemate issues (spying on neighbors, arguing about trash, complaining about noise). It proved to be a golden combination of sharp humor and supernatural elements. But even the undead cannot stay on television forever.

The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Time
Every year, there is a series in this category that shouldn't deserve to be here. Not because of the quality, but because the story is not yet complete, and the creators clearly wanted to tell more. In this case, it was The Wheel of Time, based on the epic book series by Robert Jordan. The Wheel of Time looked stunning, had a good cast led by Rosamund Pike, and told an interesting story. I would have preferred to nominate this one in a few years when the creators had the chance to finish their work and end the story in their own way.

Yellowstone (2018)

Yellowstone (2018)
Yellowstone (2018), which launched a second career for Taylor Sheridan, ceased to exist last December. Yellowstone (2018) was quintessentially western and breathed America, but with a contemporary twist. Expect drama, intrigue, stunning images of vast landscapes, and, of course, a lot of Kevin Costner. However, the Yellowstone universe is not yet extinguished, with various other spin-offs being aired or still in the making.

I personally nominated "Resident Alien," but from the list above, it's clearly "What We Do in the Shadows." Season after season, they delivered some really great humor that I always enjoyed.

And in answer to your question, "There have been two series in this category in recent years that got a new season after being nominated here." I'm not sure, but I think The X-Files and Twin Peaks? Both got an extra season years after ending.

Nope. It's much more recent. One was later made into a film, which they then split into an additional season. The other one's new season is currently in production.

It was Ted Lasso and Klem. Ted Lasso initially ended in 2023, but was then renewed, and they're now working on season four. Klem ended in 2020 after its third season, but a sequel was released a few years later. They later split it up into a three-part fourth season.

Aha, okay. I haven't followed either of those series, so I didn't know that. Learned something new on January 1st :-)

I'm going for The Wheel of Time, it's a real shame there's no new season.

I find this category difficult to choose for myself. The Wheel of Time, The Handmaid's Tale, and Andor are all eligible for nomination for Best Ending Series of 2025.
