Series of the Year 2025 - Nominations for Best Science Fiction Series of 2025

Series of the Year 2025 - Nominations for Best Science Fiction Series of 2025

This column supports the 2025 Series of the Year election, focusing on the best science fiction series category. From Monday, January 5 to Sunday, February 8, you can vote for your favorite series in this genre and many others.
It's the end of the year again, and that means we're looking back at the past series year. Many good new science fiction series have been released, and some series have already completed several seasons. In any case, for science fiction enthusiasts, 2025 was certainly not a bad year. The nominees are (as always) very diverse, ranging from series set in a galaxy far, far away to stranger things. It's also clear that nostalgia is still an important factor, just look at Alien: Earth, Andor, and Stranger Things.

Every year, it's a joy to announce the list of nominees, and I immediately feel like watching the series I haven't seen yet. In my opinion, it's been a strong year for science fiction, as evidenced by the list of nominees.

The series nominated in this category are determined based on several factors: my fellow reviewers, the results of the poll, and of course, the most important factor; the readers of MySeries! All things considered, this has resulted in a list of ten nominees.

Below, in alphabetical order, are the top ten nominees for the best science fiction series of 2025:

Alice in Borderland (2020)

Alice in Borderland (2020)
Alice in Borderland (2020) is based on the manga series of the same name that ran from 2010 to 2016. The series is set in an empty parallel version of Tokyo where the characters must play deadly games. Alice in Borderland (2020) has now completed three seasons, and it's clear that this series is popular among the users and reviewers of MySeries. The latest season contains a story that takes place after the manga series. I haven't seen the series myself yet, but I'm now curious about it.

Alien: Earth

Alien: Earth
Alien: Earth is a typical example of how nostalgia often works well. As the name suggests, Alien: Earth is about the long-running film series where Xenomorphs (often successfully) hunt the characters. This series further expands and deepens the Alien universe. Alien is no longer just about the Xenomorph (or a variant of it), and several new alien species are introduced. In my opinion, Alien: Earth is a very good series that perfectly captures the atmosphere of the old films but also has its own tone. They honor the older films and deepen the story in many different ways. This series, in my opinion, cannot be missing from the list of the best science fiction series of 2025.

Andor

Andor
Andor is a series set in the Star Wars universe, specifically in the lead-up to the film Star Wars: Rogue One. Like the first season, the second season is also very good, and the story is now complete. Even though the other Star Wars series (in general) are not bad in my opinion, Andor clearly stands out in terms of storytelling. The series, for example, has won five Emmys and was also nominated for an Emmy in the category of best drama series for the second season, something I believe no other Star Wars series has achieved. It's almost a political thriller with a good cast and spectacular action with a calm, well-thought-out build-up. Clearly, Andor is also a strong contender in this category.

Black Mirror

Black Mirror
Black Mirror has been a popular series in the science fiction category for many years now and completed its seventh season last year. Last year, the series also received an Emmy nomination for best anthology series, which matches the high quality. Of course, not every episode is equally strong, but overall it remains one of the better series. The strength, in my opinion, lies in the themes that are addressed. Many episodes deal with technological developments that are within reach, and some stories could theoretically already occur in reality. In years when Black Mirror releases a season, this series cannot be missing from this list of nominees.

Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil: Born Again
After years of absence, Daredevil is finally back. Daredevil has appeared a few times in the meantime, such as in the series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and also in the film Spiderman: No Way Home. With Daredevil: Born Again, he's truly back, and it takes place directly after the story of its predecessor Marvel's Daredevil. And the series is certainly reborn as it does not disappoint. Great cast, incredible action (including the season-standard one-shot), and just good overall. A second season was announced right at the start, and a third season is also coming. In the second season, many old faces are expected to return. Daredevil: Born Again is clearly a series that fits in this lineup.

Foundation (2021)

Foundation (2021)
Apple has been doing well for years producing quality series. This is also the case with Foundation (2021), a series based on the book series of the same name. Foundation (2021) is set in the distant future where a group of clones of a deceased emperor Cleon rules the universe. Three seasons have already been released, and in my opinion, there is enough source material to release additional seasons. I haven't seen the series myself yet, but it must be on the list.

Gen V

Gen V
Gen V is a hardcore superhero (or antihero) series that originated as a spin-off of The Boys and now has two seasons. It revolves around a group of students at Goldolkin University who are working to overthrow the organization Vought and Homelander. This season largely focuses on the new dean of the university, who has something to hide. The action is very good and bizarrely graphic. There is never a shortage of blood. Gen V is increasingly merging with The Boys, and it's possible that characters from Gen V will appear in the next season of The Boys. It already happens the other way around.

Murderbot

Murderbot
I have never seen Murderbot myself, but I have noticed that it has a large fan base. A second season has already been announced. Murderbot is about a private security product consisting of technical components and cloned human material that must perform dangerous tasks and has named itself 'Murderbot.' It must hide that it is becoming increasingly self-aware. This series is also based on a book series consisting of seven books. If it remains successful, many more seasons can be made.

Pluribus

Pluribus
From the creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul comes the series Pluribus, made for Apple. The lead actress also had an important role in Better Call Saul. Pluribus is set in a post-apocalyptic world where aliens have transformed almost the entire population into a content collective consciousness, except for a few immune people. The main character is one of these immune people who wants to add the collective consciousness to her group. This series is at the top of my watchlist, as it has been almost unanimously recommended by MySeries writers and users, and I've also received the viewing tip several times in my own circle. Like the other series, this is a strong contender for the coveted award of the best science fiction series of 2025.

Stranger Things

Stranger Things
Last but not least, Stranger Things. Stranger Things is already in its final season and will truly end on January 1, 2026. Maybe a contender for this category in 2026 as well? Stranger Things is set in Hawkins, Indiana, and follows a group of mostly children. Since five seasons have been released in ten years, the children are no longer children. But if you don't take that too seriously, it's a very fun and good series. In this world, there are people, but also creatures with supernatural powers. The action is very well done, and the cast is also strong and entertaining. It takes place in the '80s, and that's clearly noticeable in the (good) music, clothing, and hairstyles. Every episode is pure enjoyment and is practically a movie. The last four episodes all have a duration of around two hours, so it's going to be a very long season. I hope they end with a bang, which will surely be the case. Volume 1 of season five also did and was anything but disappointing. I'm very curious about the conclusion, but it's a given that this series belongs on this list.

As you have seen, it's a very diverse list of nominees. Of course, there are many more series that could also have been included in this list of nominees. The current list is, in my opinion, a good reflection of the preferences of my fellow reviewers, the poll results, and of course, the most important factor; the readers of MySeries!

Each and every one of them is a great series, and I'm very curious to see where your vote will go!

These were all ten nominees nominated by you readers, by the writers, and by myself. If you still want to choose another series, use your wildcard. Good luck voting.

There was a lot to enjoy in this category this year: Gen V, Murderbot, Alice in Borderland. But for me, it's Pluribus. A brilliant series that thankfully has already been renewed for a second season.

Minor correction to the text above: Foundation isn't based on Asimov's books, but rather on his magnum opus. Even in the first season, the story deviated considerably from the books.

So many good things this year. Andor was truly fantastic! I found Alien: Earth interesting, and I enjoyed Black Mirror, Daredevil, and the first half of Stranger Things. Season two of Gen V was a bit of a disappointment. Pluribus is still on my list, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

There's a good chance it will be Andor, or a wildcard for Doctor Who.

What an incredibly strong list of nominees this year. As a science fiction fan, I really enjoyed what 2025 had to offer.

Alien: Earth was one of the surprises for me.

Andor effortlessly continued its high standard, rarely do you see such a mature and political approach within the Star Wars universe, and once again I was completely drawn into the world and characters.

Foundation particularly captivated me in its third season. While previous seasons sometimes felt a bit detached, this one was remarkably strong and compelling, with storylines that felt both grand and personal.

And then there's Stranger Things. The first half of the fifth season literally flew by, despite the long episodes. The pace was fast, the tension was built up tightly, and it felt like a worthy prelude to the big finale. I'm incredibly curious about the remaining episodes, and hopefully, we'll get a conclusion this iconic series deserves.

But ultimately, Pluribus is a different story for me. While the other series excel in their own domain, Pluribus does something so unique, so daring, and so groundbreaking that it clearly stands out from the rest. Despite the strong competition, it's the rightful winner in this category for me.

Think I'm going for Andor - some truly great episodes in there.
