Awards: Best Sci-fi series of 2016

Awards: Best Sci-fi series of 2016

A fascination about the future. That’s where science fiction as a genre started. Robots? Aliens? Catastrophic disasters? Space travel? Incredible medical or technological breakthroughs? All themes which the average sci-fi shows use. The best ones in this category know how to balance the recognizable and the everyday with a bit (or sometimes a lot) of futuristic stuff. But which series is getting the MySeries’ recognition of the best sci-fi show of 2016? To make it easier to vote, I propose to conduct an experiment. We start with a drop of spacetravelium:

The Expanse
‘We’ve gone too far’

Almost everyone has a different opinion about this one. Some say it’s an ‘epic adventure, whereupon we’ve waited since Firefly’ (George R.R. Martin) others think it’s ‘complete rubbish’ (Our news writer Mandy Gelling). Visually speaking, this is a very strong series which knows how to use special effects to make a scene more believable. It’s a relatively new one among some veterans. Can The Expanse claim the title?

Now, we add a teaspoon of alienoxide and keep stirring till we discussed the next nominee:

Colony
‘The invasion is over. The fight is about to begin.’

Colony had a promising first episode. Raw, recognizable and a clear premise. But, this series made itself known as a show with aliens. Isn’t it bad writing when there is absolutely no alien in the entire first season? Some agree, others say it’s good because of building suspense. Whatever you think, is Colony going to be number one?

Now that we’ve stirred everything, we add some huge shots of Robotium and put it on a low simmer. Onto the next nomination:

Humans
‘Made in our image, out of our control.’

Most people agree: the remake of the Swedish show ‘Real Humans’ is an asset to broadcastland. Terrifying, realistic and very well acted, are words that state the quality of the show. This series is about robots which look so similar to humans, it’s almost impossible to differentiate them from humans. This is, maybe, the most interesting theme for a science-fiction show. But, is it possible for robots to mimic winners?

Everything is cooked, so we put it in the freezer. Just long enough to make some apocalypticum ice crystals appear. So,our next nominee is:

The 100
‘Survival isn’t who you are, it is who you become.’

What started as a typical teenage drama at The CW, became a hidden gem in the network's line-up. A story full of plot twists many people didn’t see coming. The acting may be a little shaky, but the sets, music and story rose to heights many apocalyptic shows never could achieve. The 100 could be a dangerous outsider, but can they survive?

With a special fork, we take the crystals out of the freezer and douse them with a medically unknown black goo. We let it rest till the next nominee has made itself known.

Stranger Things:
‘I don’t care if anyone believes me.’

This Netflix show was responsible for Winona Ryder's comeback and Millie Bobby Brown's breakthrough. An intense and terrifying story about, well what exactly? An alternative dimension? A medically unexplainable monster? While watching, you have no idea what the actual theme of the show is, but it seems a formula for success. Many people binged through the first season and cannot wait till the second season is released. Is this show going to win? Stranger things have happened…

As soon as every inch is covered, we put the coated crystal in the oven. How long? Time is relative...

12 Monkeys
‘Unmake history.’

Time travel is inseparable from science fiction. The show makes use of this theme, with verve. With a good story, a diverse cast and great sets, 12 Monkeys sets the bar for time-travel shows. What started as a simple mission to ‘just go back in time’ evolved into a true race between predestination and free will. Some think it’s too philosophical, others say it’s fantastic. If they don’t win this year, what will stop them to win last year?

Our experiment is almost finished. We pour the melted crystals into their mould, add a few drops of technologicalcium, and put it back in the oven.

Black Mirror
‘The future is bright.’

To be honest, this is the only show on the list I have never watched. But the comments are incredible! A distorted homage to the technological era in which we live. Striking, almost perfect and spectacular are keywords which prove the quality of the show. This must be great, but good enough for the title?

It's not done yet, a couple of more minutes in the oven. Enough time for us to move to the next nominee:

Dark Matter
‘I’ve got no clue who I am.’

Not many shows have such different opinions about them. Praised by some, but others think it’s utter rubbish. At IMDb, 20% rates Dark Matter lower than a five while 16% thinks it deserves a nine or higher. As I said, opinions vary. There is a high probability the crew will never remember this contest, but is that a good thing or bad one?

A big black cloud escapes the oven and to my surprise there are now two completely identical mixtures. That reminds me of a certain show...

Orphan Black
‘A clone is never alone.’

A sigh of relief resounded through the world when Tatiana Maslany finally won an Emmy. She portrays various characters which, each in his or her own way, are completely different yet the same. An acting masterpiece. The other cast members, the story and the music are of the same quality. Orphan Black is one of the absolute favourites to claim the title. But nothing is as unpredictable as an election this year, right?

Westworld
‘Where life begins.’

With a lot of fuss, HBO announced Westworld. And the response was overwhelming. Comparisons with Game of Thrones were made. And it’s not crazy at all if you look at the top cast. It's a story of deep connections, suspicious robots and huge plot twists. If Orphan Black is a favourite, then Westworld is the absolute favourite. Are they going to win or is the biggest plot twist still coming?

It’s time for the ‘grande’ unveiling of our experiment. Slowly we raise the red curtain. And? What is it? You never guess. It’s a golden cup. The cup for the best science-fiction series of 2016. Cause, let’s be honest, what’s more appropriate than an experimental cup for shows about experimental subjects. Wonderful, how philosophical! And now, go vote! Cause that’s the only way you make sure your favourite wins! #Ivoted
