Awards: The Best New Series of 2016

This column is intended to give some extra information regarding the nomination for the best new series of 2016. From Thursday, 5 January until Saturday, 4 February you can vote for your favourite in this category.

This year a lot of new series have been released, either on TV or online. Here are the best ten new series, from fantasy to rom-coms. One of them must have been one you enjoyed this year, so read on for the nominees!

The first new series which has been nominated is The Shannara Chronicles. This show is based on the books by Terry Brooks. It takes place in Four Lands where magic has replaced technology. In this story we follow Wil, Amberle and Eretria during their quest to save the Ellcrys and defeat evil. A promising series which has been renewed for a second season.

The next one, Shadowhunters, is also based on a series of books, namely The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. At age eighteen, Clary Fray finds out she is a human-angel hybrid. She is descended from a long line of Shadowhunters. Her new purpose is protecting humans from demons. After a successful first season, the show has been renewed for a second season.

Let's move on with the next one, a drama series called Billions. This show is about the sly U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades and the brilliant hedge fund king Bobby Axelrod. Billions are on the line while they play a cat-and-mouse game. Criminal court cases are the order of the day.

Love, a series which premiered right after Valentine's Day, is the lowest-rated one, but is still a rather popular comedy. It follows Mickey and Gus on their dates while they explore their prospects of a romantic relationship. This causes humiliating and intimate moments which they would rather have avoided.

Westworld is a story about a futuristic theme park populated with robots. These robots make the visitors' fantasies come true. At the park, visitors can experience anything without fear. But when the park breaks down, the fantasies are not without consequences.

The Crown is a series which takes place between 1947 and 1956 and follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II during her younger years. The Crown shows the drastic changes when Elizabeth is crowned at a young age in a time of political unrest. Suddenly, as a young woman, she is been given a lot of serious responsibilities.

11.22.63 is a mini series based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. The series follows an English teacher who travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President Kennedy on 11.22.63. But he finds out he is linked to a life from the past. This show consists of one season of eight episodes.

Lucifer is a fantasy/crime series about the ruler of hell. Lucifer is dissatisfied, so he relinquishes his title and leaves hell and goes to Los Angeles. Here he finds a new and exciting life with the LAPD when he starts helping them to catch criminals.

Stranger Things is a drama series which takes place in the 1980s and is about secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and a strange girl. These mysteries all come to light when a twelve-year-old boy disappears from Hawkins, Indiana. This show is based on the work of several great fantasy writers.

The last one is This is US. It is a provoking, refreshingly honest show about a group of people who are curiously linked. When they cross paths, it appears they have some things in common, like a birthday. Although it seems very coincidental, it turns out it is not.
