Series of the year 2018 - Best sciencefiction series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2018 and discusses the category Best science-fiction series. Between Monday January 7th and Monday February 4th you can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others.

Science-fiction. What kind of futuristic stuff have we seen this year?

Aliens? Check.
Future disasters? Check.
Special powers? Check.
Robots? Check.
Time travel? Check.

It was another exciting year. The list of this year contains three new nominees. The surprising winner of two years ago is once again part of the list and there's also a new series from which I expect quite a bit.

Briefly put, there's plenty of options. Below you can find the list of nominees in alphabetical order. Good luck voting!

Altered Carbon

Dark, gritty and sometimes a tad complicated. This new Netflix show in a nutshell. Especially the acting received critical acclaim. Is that enough for this show to end up in the spotlights?

Unfortunately this is the final year that Colony can be nominated. The grim reaper of series has struck and Colony will no longer return. Because of that it may be even more important for this show to perform well during these awards.
Here you can read the reviews that were written about Colony.

Doctor Who

Doctor Who. It remains an odd show. There's two kinds of people, the ones who have watched it since 2005 and those who don't care for it at all. With the arrival of Jodie Whittaker the show has entered a new era, which I think is something most people are happy about. Maybe a show that can win?

Lost in Space (2018)

Some people would say that the story of Lost in Space has been exploited for as much money as possible. Can you tell this story one more time without it being boring? According to most reactions, yes you can.

Actually, Manifest is the opposite of Lost. In the case of Lost everyone was stuck on an island for several years, whereas in Manifest everyone was stuck in a plane for several years. The beginning of Manifest is intriguing and thus it's a worthy show to be on this list.

Star Trek: Discovery

Trekkies pay attention! Another Star Trek show has been nominated. I haven't seen the second season as of yet, but apparently it's only getting better. With such a large cult status, a show such as this one may actually have a chance to win.

The Handmaid’s Tale

May the lord open. I have only just begun with this series. There's certainly a lot of quality here. It is definitely worth a watch. But has it been seen by enough people to end up on the stage?

The 100

The surprising winner of two years ago and the runner-up of last year. Nobody saw that coming, neither did I. The 100 isn't the hidden gem I thought it was. Especially coming from the CW network, one that doesn't really have that big an audience and where shows usually don't have the quality that critics would like to see, this is a special show. Will The 100 prolong its title or will they have to let it go?
Here you can read the reviews that were written about The 100.

Maybe the surprising loser of two years ago. I thought that Westworld would win, but I was completely wrong. It's a good thing that something like that happened, because it keeps things exciting! Maybe Westworld will take the title this year? It definitely won't lose because of the quality of this season.
Here you can read the reviews that were written about Westworld.

12 Monkeys

This will also be the last time that 12 Monkeys can be nominated. We've decided to bring some life back into this show, remove it from its grave and place it on this list. A glorious downfall or stopping at your peak? Time will tell.....
