Science fiction is a widely interpretable genre. One where stories are told about - often- fictional events that lead to a change in a world. The popularity of this genre is enormous in recent years, and we have seen it used in many variations. Sometimes it leans to fantasy, while in other moments the focus is more realistic. For creators and directors, the science fiction genre is one to immerse the viewers in a world full of monsters, futuristic techniques, old feuds and magical objects. The year 2019 is no different.

This list features the ten best science fiction series of 2019 in all of its kinds, based on quality and popularity. Is your personal favorite missing? You can always use a wildcard to vote for a different series. Good luck!

Stranger Things

In 2019, Netflix presented us with the third season of Stranger Things. This success formula and public favourite becomes, of course, with every season a bit bigger, more spectacular and more explosive. In this way the protagonists in Hawkins, again, have to deal with a good dose of mystery. The adolescent years of Will, Dustin, Mike, Lucas and Eleven start restlessly and a new battle with the monster from The Upside Down is fought out. The 80s setting still feels like before and so this success formula of the Duffer brothers can start a fourth season with confidence.

His Dark Materials

At the end of November, BBC One, in collaboration with HBO, started broadcasting the highly anticipated His Dark Materials. This adaptation of the book series with the same name by Philip Pullman tells the story of Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen). She lives in a world full of magic and goes on a desperate rescue mission when her friend Roger and some children go missing. So far, the series has been a viewing success and - not unexpectedly - a second season has already been announced.

The Mandalorian

Another series that premiered in November 2019. The Mandalorian is set in the Star Wars universe and is broadcast on the Disney + streaming service that launched this year. The Mandalorian is the (first) flagship of the service and tells the story of a lonely bounty hunter (The Mandalorian) on the outer edge of the galaxy. In particular, the many recognizable elements from the Star Wars universe are doing well.

Counterpart

After two seasons, Counterpart from the Starz channel came to an end. In this show, Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons) travels to a parallel universe and warns his parallel counterpart Prime of a world of intrigue, danger and deception. Counterpart was a spicy series that you had to watch very closely. The alternative worlds that hated each other against a Berlin background has impressed for two seasons and brings a beautiful and closed story.

The 100

Not to be missed in this list is The 100. The series is based on the Alloy book series by Kass Morgan and is an absolute favourite for many, for others a guilty pleasure and for others this CW series is a huge no-go. The quality can of course be disputed, but the adventures of Clarke Griffin, Octavia Blake, John Murphy and Bellamy Blake on earth (and in space) have been intensively followed by many viewers for six seasons.

Star Trek: Discovery

In addition to Star Wars, there was plenty to enjoy for Trekkies again this year. The second season of Star Trek: Discovery from CBS All Access was broadcasted early and was received positively. Again we follow Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew in a search for a member of her crew and some enemies who must be defeated. Nostalgia also plays a major role here, because who doesn't want to encounter a Klingon again?

The War Of The Worlds

The War Of The Worlds is a much-edited story. Originally a science fiction novel by H.G. Wells who, years later, with the famous radio play by Orson Welles, sparked a lot of dust. In 2019 the story received two series edits that were released shortly after each other. In the BBC version that is nominated here, George and Amy try to build a life while they are burdened by increasing terror of a foreign invasion after a meteorite hits their neighborhood. The beautiful classic British setting makes the contrast of the story even stronger.

Carnival Row

This series from Amazon received a big announcement this year. The announcement was accompanied by a well-known name and none other than Orlando Bloom was cast in one of the main roles. The series is set in an old Victorian world where humanity - as is often the case - suppresses magical and mythical creatures. Rycroft Philostrate (Bloom) investigates a series of murders that can lead to a horrific war. Carnival Row was very well received and looks beautiful above all. A second season will follow.

See

That Netflix is no longer the only streaming service that delivers quality series is no longer news. Apple TV + released See this year, a series from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Taboo). In See, humanity has been largely eradicated by a persistent virus. The two million that do survive have lost their sight. One of them is Baba Voss, played by Jason Momoa. In his tribe, centuries after the virus struck, a twin is born that can see. The beginning of a lot of disaster. Another cast member is Sylvia Hoeks, as the dark Queen Kane.

The Handmaid's Tale

One of the top series of the moment: The Handmaid's Tale. This Hulu series is a mix of drama and science fiction and describes life in the Gilead Republic, where fundamentalists are in power with an unpleasant obsession with reproduction. June (Elisabeth Moss) was placed in a new situation in this third season that caused all kinds of new problems and as a viewer we got a better view of life outside of Gilead. Just like in 2018, another nomination!
