Series of the year 2019 - Best crime series

This column supports the Series of the Year 2019 election and covers the category crime series. Between Monday, January 6th and Monday, February 3rd you can vote on your favorite series in this genre, and many more.

In 2019 our screens were filled with interesting crime stories. One who really knows their series, will notice that in every series category a certain amount of crime is always around the corner. Sometimes it's petty crime, such as smoking a joint or maybe petty theft. Sometimes, however, a hefty crime is part of a series, but the series itself isn't considered a crime series.

In this category we'll focus on shows that we can call 'pure crime' series. Those of you who go through this list will quickly note that some of the shows contain various and diverse heavy crimes. Bank robberies, drug trafficking, assassinations, serial killing, gang formation, terrorism and even just regular murder. Don't agree with our ten nominees? No worries, you can always use your wildcard to select a different show that fits the theme.

La Casa de Papel

Everyone who has seen La Casa de Papel is extremely enthusiastic about the show. It doesn't come as a surprise that this Spanish monster is the only foreign language series that is part of this top 10.

Mayans MC (2018)

Started off as a sequel to Sons of Anarchy, but Mayans MC (2018) finally starts to lead a life of its own. The background is the same, but the story is vastly different.

Ray Donovan

Ray Donovan contines to improve itself, both in his line of work and in the various scenarios. I'm curious if Liev Schreiber is able to leave his character behind. Although, the viewer is far from bored with Ray Donovan.

Peaky Blinders

Crime and politics clearly go hand in hand, certainly in the time when Peaky Blinders takes place. The Shelby's do not always have it easy on their way to the top, but they always guarantee brilliant television

True Detective

A return through the main gate. You can say that about the third season of True Detective. The second season almost meant the downfall of the series, but thanks to the ingredients that made the debut season a topper, True Detective again stands out among the nominees

One of the most surprising crime series of 2019 in which a master thief - after her imprisonment - ends up in the crime scene, again. She ends up in a spiral of violence between two men who both want her skillset.

Mr. Mercedes

Stay afloat after one of the two main characters has disappeared. The creators of Mr. Mercedes were able to realise it in the third season. Even better, many find this third season stronger than the second, which highlights this nomination even more.

Warrior (2019)

Chinese immigration at the end of the 19th century is the start of this series in which a man ends up in America, looking for his sister. For example, he ends up at one of the Chinese crime organizations that are fighting for dominion over drugs, prostitution and other obscure matters. Beautifully portrayed.

Killing Eve

The second season of Killing Eve was rather intriguing. The confrontation between the two main ladies of this series resulted in many exciting moments filled with exhilaration.

The Rook

Perhaps the biggest surprise with these nominees, as I was not impressed by the main character in my final verdict. Or should I say the actress who shaped her. The fact that the main character's erased memory was erased and her search for the truth in combination with the acting of the other actors ensured that The Rook deserved a place in this list.
