Corona crisis; which series to watch? Ron Schoonwater's top 5

It has become a well-known image, empty supermarket shelves, empty squares and shopping malls. People work from home or not at all. How can you spend that time? We have made a top 5 displaying series you could watch in these peculiar times.
Once I was asked if I could write a top-five list for the corona crisis, I didn't hesitate at all. After that I was struggling a bit, there are many solid series. Way more than five. Apart from that, it may be a bit difficult to find a specific theme. Eventually, I decided on the theme 'escape'. Television series that help us escape from reality.

5. Cold Feet

A British series about the problems of a group of friends. The most recent seasons were mainly filled with the activities of their troublesome children. Escape from social distancing by watching a series that makes you think about the time when you were still able to hang out with your group of friends. Does help you take your mind off things.

4. Sanditon

The best way to escape from reality is to escape to a different time. Costume dramas are the best answer. Usually, there's quite a few of them, and most of them are quite good. Sanditon is based on an unfinished story from Jane Austen. Romanticism all around. The mix of humour, but also a slight amount of feminism, ensures that Sanditon is a fine series to help you escape reality. If you want something that is exactly like this, you can always try Vanity Fair (2018).

3. The Expanse

Escaping to a different time, but especially to a different world has never been more appealing. If that's what you want, then don't go to the obvious series or movies, but go to Amazon Prime and pick The Expanse. Even though I didn't enjoy the first season, the rest of the series is an absolute masterpiece. Go on an adventure with the Rocinante and her crew and find out that even in the future humanity is afflicted by the unknown.

2. Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter

For some people, it remains a difficult situation. In a time when we are struggling or when a statement has to be made, WW2 is brought up quite often. Even now, this war is mentioned quite a lot. On social media, a lot of people are saying that the elderly had to fight for our freedom, whereas all we have to do is stay inside and sit on our couch. The things that happened during this war can be quite confronting, especially how this German series shows it. The war disrupts relationships and an entire lifestyle. Maybe it is easy to see the link?

1. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

The genre pretty much says it all, fantasy. There is no better way to escape reality than (your own) fantasy. Something that we seem to have lost in the current busy times. It is unimaginable that many people don't know this television series and the original film. The use of puppets may be quite appalling for some. As we have to deviate from the usual anyways, it is my advice to do that. Take a trip to this world that isn't ours, but has the same traits. Greed, judgement, but also a small group of those who think differently. Dare to fantasise.

I can name a lot more fantastic series. There are plenty of genres. I advise you to take a look at all the great reviews on this website. There is one series that I want to mention. I'm talking about Alias Grace (Netflix). The same writer writes the story as from The Handmaid's Tale. Soon there will be plenty more top-fives that'll help you pass the time.
