Corona crisis; which series to watch? Top 5 best historical detectives

Many great, fun and interesting top-five lists have been released to fill the time we would usually fill with going out and visiting relatives. Enjoy watching! Historical series have various different sub-genres. This time, we'll focus on historical detec

Despite governments all around the world thinking that we can slowly end the social distancing, I still think that most of us are watching a lot of television series. That is why I´ve decided to create another (hopefully) nice list. Naturally, one of the most famous historical detectives is Sherlock Holmes (1984). The stories of Agatha Christie are also a fantastic source of inspiration, but they are not my favourite. There are loads of other historical detectives. This is my top five.

5. Foyle's War (2002 – 2015)

Great feel-good series that takes place during and just after WW2. The war may be going on, but that doesn't mean there is no criminal activity. Christopher Foyle, his assistant Paul Milner and driver Samantha 'Sam' Stewart solve all the cases.

4. Garrow's Law - Tales from the Old Bailey (2009 – 2011)

Garrow's Law - Tales from the Old Bailey takes place in eighteenth-century England. The stories are based on authentic legal files from that time. The cases are dealt with at Old Bailey, the legendary court of justice in London. Young lawyer Garrow fights for the suppressed in their fight against corruption and social inequality. Next to that, Garrow finds himself occupied with his love Lady Sarah.

3. Anno 1790 (2011)

Unfortunately, it only had one season. The production quality was amazing. This Swedish series takes place in Stockholm in 1790. In an attempt to change the justice system from the inside, this revolutionary doctor Johan Gustav Dààdh tries to join the police as an inspector. Dààdh is brave and stubborn and uses modern but controversial methods to solve homicide cases.

2. George Gently (2007 – 2017)

In a world filled with corruption and (police)violence, inspector George Gently fights for justice. He's supported by sergeant Bacchus. The relation between the two is often tense. Not just because of the generation gap, but also because they are completely different. The personal lives of both are quite important as well. The ending of this British television series is impressive.

1. Babylon Berlin (2017 – present)

Germany has an incredibly rich history filled with detectives. During the last couple of years, the Germans have provided us once more with great television series in this genre. Babylon Berlin takes place in between the two world wars. The main character is an addicted detective from Köln, who is trying to find an adult film. The second main character is an ambitious young girl, who is a typist at the local precinct during the day and a dancer, animater and amateur detective at night. Great imagery with surprising colourful pictures and a quirky story ensure a great series.

For those of you who think I have forgotten about Ripper Street, don't worry. I wanted to mention that one, but it was already part of another list. Just like the American/British Copper.
