ABC cancels, renews and orders

Good and bad news was released when ABC announced various renewals and cancellations. They've also announced what will replace the cancelled series.

Let's start off with the bad news. It's a pretty big deal when a network such as ABC announces that they've decided to cancel five series. Some of these cancellations were quite surprising.

For instance, Rebel (2021). It features Katey Sagal. After only five episodes, ABC decided to cancel the Krista Vernoff series. Apparently, the ratings of the legal drama series that revolves around Erin Brockovich were just too low. The immensely popular Grey's Anatomy aired just before this series, but that also didn't help. The story and the air time of the series didn't result in enough viewers, unfortunately.

For Life will not have a third season. But, the creators are looking for a new home for the legal drama series. Mixed-ish has been cancelled as well. The Black-ish spin-off had an uncertain future for some time, as the ratings weren't all that great in the second season.

American Housewife has been cancelled after five seasons. Even though the series is one of the best-watched series, ABC has decided to cancel it. The new comedy series Call You Mother has been cancelled as well. Kyra Sedgwick revealed on Twitter that the cancellation came to be due to a chaotic schedule: "Before it goes out there in the world I want my fans to be the first to know that next Wednesday will be the last episode of “Call Your Mother”. You guys have been so wonderful to tune in every week, or every other week or every two weeks! The rollout was nuts!"

Then let's continue with some good news. The Conners has been renewed with its fourth season. The Roseanne spin-off is considered to be one of the best series on ABC. The drama series A Million Little Things will also return for its fourth season. The police drama series The Rookie has also been renewed by the alphabet network. Then we have three more comedies that have been renewed: Home Economics, The Goldbergs (2013) and Black-ish. The latter will be cancelled after its upcoming eighth season.

Then there were several pilot orders. Some of them didn't make it. The drama Acts of Crime and the comedies Black Don't Crack and Bucktown weren't ordered. On the other hand, some did quite well: The Wonder Years, Queens, Maggie and Abbott Elementary. It is expected that these series will be part of the next television season.

The future of five pilots is currently undetermined: Kevin Costner's (photo) National Park Investigation, Dark Horse, Epic Promised Land and Triage. These are all still waiting to be picked up. It is likely that these will become mid-season series.
