Starz orders Watergate drama series Gaslit

Julia Roberts and Sean Penn are listed as cast members of this upcoming Starz series.
Even though the series has lost quite a few names on the way, the Watergate drama Gaslit is still going to proceed forward at Starz. The series will be based on the podcast State's Slow Burn. The network has ordered the series featuring Roberts (Homecoming, photo (L) and Penn (The First, photo (R) in the lead. At first, Joel and Nash Edgerton were supposed to portray the lead characters, but they are no longer part of the project.

Joel and Nash have joined Armie Hammer, who has also left the project. It dates back from February 2020, the series will now be directed by Matt Ross (Silicon Valley). Robbie Pickering (Mr. Robot) remains in the position of showrunner.

Production on the new anthology series is set to start later this spring. Gaslit is a contemporary version of Watergate and focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters from the scandal. Nixons incompetent and opportunistic subordinates, the dangerous overachievers who participated in the crimes and the tragic whistleblowers who eventually led to the demise of the project will all be featured.

Roberts portrays Martha Mitchell, a big personality with an even bigger mouth. Martha is a known socialite from Arkansas and the wife of the loyal procurer-general of Nixon, John Mitchell (Penn). Despite her membership in a party, she is the first to publicly reveal Nixon's involvement with Watergate, which results in the presidency and her personal life falling apart. As procurer-general, Mitchell is the most-trusted advisor and closest friend of Nixon. Temperamental, mean and ruthless - but hopelessly in love with his famous outspoken wife - he will be forced to choose between Martha and the president.
