Prime Video Orders Butterfly with Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Hawaii Five-O (2010))

Prime Video has given Butterfly a series order of Daniel Dae Kim's 3AD and Boom! Studios, publisher of the eponymous comic by Arash Amel.
Butterfly is a character-driven espionage thriller that explores complex family dynamics within the treacherous world of global espionage and is based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel series created by Arash Amel, written by Amel and Marguerite Bennett, and illustrated by Antonio Fuso and Stefano Simeone.

Kim (pictured) will star in the six-episode series, and Ken Woodruff (The Mentalist, Gotham) has been appointed as showrunner and co-creator for the film adaptation, along with writer Steph Cha. This is Kim's first solo starring role in a series.

It revolves around David Jung (Kim), an enigmatic, highly unpredictable former US intelligence agent living in South Korea. His life is blown up when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him, and he's pursued by Rebecca, a deadly, sociopathic young cop who is sent to kill him.

Butterfly, which will enter production after WGA, DGA and SAG-AFTRA reach new agreements with AMPTP, was one of more than a dozen mini writer's rooms Amazon Studios has ordered in recent months. It's one of several projects being considered for a series, including Criminal, based on the Ed Brubaker comic.

Executive producers on the series are Ken Woodruff and Steph Cha, Daniel Dae Kim and John Cheng for 3AD, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie for Boom! Studios, and Arash Amel for The Amel Company. In addition, Adam Yoelin is a co-executive producer for Boom! Studios.

Kim's production company, 3AD developed the series under their first-look deal with Amazon Studios. The company produces the successful ABC series The Good Doctor, which has been renewed for a seventh season.

Kim recently completed filming for Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender, in which he plays Fire Lord Ozai. Kim became known to the general public for his role of Jin-Soo Kwon in the successful ABC mystery series Lost. He then played Chin Ho Kelly on CBS' reboot series Hawaii Five-0 (2010) for seven seasons. The actor also starred in an episode of Apple's female-centric anthology series Roar, opposite Betty Gilpin, and an episode of BJ Novak's anthology series The Premise for FX on Hulu.

Kim previously played the co-lead opposite Tony Goldwyn in Nat Geo's scripted series The Hot Zone: Anthrax. On the big screen, he can be seen in Joe Penna's Stowaway.
