Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan collaborate on fantasy series Fourth Wing

Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights to Rebecca Yarros' fantasy book series The Empyrean. The studio, along with Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society, is developing the first title in the series, Fourth Wing.
Sources tell that the acquisition took place pre-WGA strike, following a heated auction. Outlier will exec produce the Fourth Wing series under its overall series deal with Amazon, inked in 2021.

Also set as EPs are Yarros and Liz Pelletier for Entangled Publishing. Should the adaptation prove a success, we hear, there’s the potential for each book in Yarros’ series to be developed into its own separate TV project. The second novel, Iron Flame, is out November 7th.

The launch title for Entangled Publishing's Red Tower imprint, Fourth Wing, has proven explosively popular since its release on May 2, selling millions of copies worldwide in more than forty languages. The book introduces readers to the brutal world of Basgiath War College, where there is only one rule: Graduate or die.

Our twenty-year-old protagonist, Violet Sorrengail, expected to live a quiet life surrounded by books and history. But she is set on a very different path when her tough general of a mother orders her to join the hundreds of candidates aspiring to become Navarre's elite: dragon riders. If the fire-breathing beasts don't kill her, perhaps one of her fellow riders will.

Fourth Wing was named a Barnes & Noble and Indigo Best Book of 2023 and spent 25 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, including thirteen weeks at No. 1. The novel also spent 25 weeks at the top of the Amazon bestseller list. The novel has also been high on Amazon's bestsellers list for 25 weeks and has generated more than a billion views on TikTok across all related hashtags.

In the run-up to its November release, more than four hundred bookstores signed up to host midnight release parties for the second Iron Flame book, with book tour events selling out in minutes. There are three more books in the fantasy adventure series on the way.

Although Yarros has published more than twenty books to date, The Empyrean is her first foray into fantasy. Other notable titles from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author include Great and Precious Things, In the Likely Event, A Little Too Close, The Things We Leave Unfinished, The Last Letter, and Reason to Believe, to name a few to name.

Outlier Society scored a record-breaking TKO earlier this year with Creed III, directed and produced by Jordan, which grossed more than $275 million worldwide. The Amazon MGM threequel, in which Jordan reprises his role as boxer Adonis "Donnie" Creed, exceeded all expectations when it launched in March. It delivered the biggest opening weekend ever for Amazon, as well as the biggest for a sports movie and for any film in the Creed and Rocky franchises.

Prior to the WGA strike, the company also signed on to produce two other projects for Amazon: the thriller The Dwelling, based on the short story by Aaron Jayh, and the action thriller Iron Curtain, for which Mission: Impossible franchise's Christopher McQuarrie is also a producer will be. McQuarrie and Emmy winner Erik Jendresen will rewrite the Iron Curtain screenplay.

Founded in 2011, Entangled Publishing is one of the largest 100% female-owned independent publishers in the adult, young adult and children's book markets. With thirteen brand names and many appearances on the New York Times bestseller list, Entangled is distributed by Big Five publisher Macmillan.
