Producers of The Witcher and The Wheel of Time are teaming up for Otherland

Platige Image (The Witcher) and Mount Devil are teaming up with Mike Weber, executive producer of The Wheel of Time, on a television series based on Otherland, the four-part book series by Tad Williams.
Otherland (the books and the television adaptation) is described as "an epic cyberpunk fantasy adventure". The synopsis reads: "The world as we know it has an extra layer here - hyper-realistic VR arenas that have become a new place for fun, work, education as well as debauchery, crime and abuse. The mysterious Otherland, supposedly another layer of the network, becomes just a starting point for a multi-world adventure.

The Inception-like mechanics feature a series of worlds, some eerily similar to the world we know, and others bizarre clusters of familiar creations and characters. There are intergalactic taverns, medieval fantasy and World War I battlefields, to name a few.”

“I believe Tad has written the definitive work on the conflict between the human experience and technological advancements,” said Weber in an exclusive statement to Deadline. “He depicts a not-so-distant future where the choice between living in the real or the virtual world becomes a choice between life or death. The prescient themes and fantastic characters give Otherland all the foundations of a next-level sci-fi drama series adaptation.”

Weber is credited as the architect of The Wheel of Time series. He first brought the project to Sony Pictures TV and oversaw development and production after the project was sold to Amazon. From London, he continues to oversee Wheel, which is currently filming season three. He is also executive producer of Sony's Jumanji film franchise.

Platige Image, the studio behind The Witcher and the collaboration with Love, Death & Robots, has a history of more than twenty years. They are best known for their innovative techniques in animation and VFX, with film credits on games such as Metro Exodus, Cyberpunk 2077 and Call of Duty: Warzone.

The content broker and co-producer Mount Devil was founded in 2020 to identify and acquire exceptional ideas, licenses and stories to develop them into series and/or films.

The Otherland production team has received funding from Creative Europe Media and is in the process of interviewing writers/showrunners.

Big fan of Ted Williams, so I'm very curious to see what they will make from it. :)
