Production of biographical series on Gandhi begins in India

The upcoming streaming Gandhi series has gone into production in Gujarat, India.
The series is directed by director Hansal Mehta, who was seen on set on an Instagram from the account of series producer Applause Entertainment (see photo).

The series will tell the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi, in the same way The Crown told the story of the British royals. Pratik Gandhi plays the role of his namesake.

The Insta post stated that it is an "international production, shot in various Indian and foreign locations". In an interview with Applause CEO Sameer Nair in May 2022, he said location scouting took place in India, South Africa and the United Kingdom - countries where Gandhi lived and which are featured in the non-fiction books on which the series is based.

Further production details have not yet been announced, but Applause previously said that the series will follow Gandhi's early days, his actions as a lawyer in South Africa to the struggle for independence in India, telling the lesser-known stories from his life that played an important role in the formation of him as a Mahatma (a revered person in Southeast Asia).

It will also tell the stories of all his countrymen and contemporaries of the freedom movement, who played an integral role in shaping free and modern India. However, no further casting details have been announced.

Applause Entertainment, which produces in association with its Applause Productions division, began developing the series after acquiring the rights to Indian historian and journalist Ramachandra Guha's Gandhi Before India and Gandhi - The Years that Changed the World - two biographies that are among the most complete ever written about the iconic political figure.

No buyer has been secured at this time, but that is not unusual for an Applause project. Under the Indian studio's business model, it develops and produces high-end scripted series and films before selling the final product to Indian streamers. There's no word yet on where it will end, but the series was recently chosen as one of Deadline's fifteen international television dramas to look forward to in 2024.
