Hulu Officially Orders Limited Series About Amanda Knox and Finds Lead Actress

It's official: Hulu has ordered a limited series about Amanda Knox and an actress to play the lead role of Knox.
Knox served nearly four years in Italy in 2007 for the murder of Meredith Kercher, an exchange student with whom she shared an apartment in Perugia, before she was acquitted. She wrote about her experiences in her 2013 memoir Waiting to be Heard and was also featured in the 2016 Netflix documentary Amanda Knox. The case was previously dramatized in the Lifetime film Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy.

Margaret Qualley (pictured) will play Knox, who was wrongfully convicted of the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher. The limited series, first reported in January, will focus on her 16-year struggle to clear her name.

The series will consist of eight one-hour episodes.

Qualley has two Emmy nominations to her name - one for Maid in 2022 and for Fosse/Verdon in 2019. She also had a series regular role in HBO's supernatural drama series The Leftovers. Her film roles include the films Poor Things, with Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood.

The as-yet-untitled project from 20th Television in association with The Littlefield Company is from KJ Steinberg, who will also serve as executive producer. Steinberg was an executive producer on NBC's This Is Us. Previously, she created and produced ABC's Mistresses (US).

Qualley will executive produce alongside Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Ann Johnson, & Graham Littlefield of The Littlefield Company, as well as Monica Lewinsky, Knox and Chris Robinson of Knox Robinson Productions.

The Knox series had been in development at Hulu for a while. Lewinsky, who is also known for her activism, talked about the series in an appearance on Today in October about a PSA campaign about self-bullying.

‘I wish it were announced already, but I’m executive producing a limited series that’s on another young woman who found her life decimated and ripped apart on the world stage, but she somehow managed to survive,” she said at the time. “I think it’s going to be really powerful.”
