Science fiction series Earth Abides ordered by MGM+

MGM+ has given the green light to an adaptation of Earth Abides, a new version of the science fiction novel of the same name by George R. Stewart.
When an unprecedented plague sweeps the world, the human race is nearly wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors are left to fight the slide into extinction.

The six-episode limited series stars Vikings actor Alexander Ludwig (pictured) in the lead role as Ish. Production begins April 8 in Vancouver. Earth Abides will premiere on MGM+ in late 2024.

Ish is a brilliant but lonely young geologist who leads a semi-isolated life. He wakes up from a coma and discovers that there is no one left alive but him. An unprecedented plague has swept the world and yes, there are a few scattered survivors, but there are no rules.

The series is created by showrunner Todd Komarnicki and comes from MGM+ Studios and executive producers Kearie Peak and Lighthouse Productions' Michael Phillips and Juliana Maio.

“It’s very special to reintroduce Earth Abides to fans of George Stewart’s seminal work of science fiction, as well as to a new generation,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+ in a statement. “The story’s messages of humanity, hope, and compassion are as relevant today as they were nearly a century ago.”

“It has been an unmitigated thrill to adapt such a seminal sci-fi work, and the themes illuminated by George Stewart 75 years ago could not be more meaningful and timelier for the world we are living in today,” said Komarnicki. “Despite the chaos and division that greets us every morning in the news, the truth remains that the way forward for society is through unity, compassion, forgiveness, understanding, and grace.”

Ludwig became known to the general public as Cato in the first Hunger Games film from 2012. Two years later he appeared as Björn Ironside, the son of main character Ragnar Lothbrok and his first wife Lagertha, in History Channel's Vikings. Ludwig also had a regular role in Starz's boxing drama Heels, which was cancelled last year after two seasons.

In 1949 this was perhaps a new theme. But it has now become a somewhat tired genre for films and TV. The Last of Us, the Mad Max films, The Walking Dead, you name it. So I'm curious how they think this variation on the theme will be so special that people will want to see it. The Last of Us was based on an extremely popular game and it also turned out to be great TV. But I think this book is hardly known. I have a nice SF collection myself, but had never heard of this author. I hope it will find an audience. In any case, I'll give it a chance.
