The series comes from Warner Bros. Television, Fox Entertainment and John Wells Productions. The backorder brings the first season of Rescue HI-Surf, which will air in 2024-25, to 19 episodes.
The network has been excited about the project from the start, which marks Wells' return to television after ER and The West Wing. It gave the series a straight-to-series order last April, seeing it as a potential franchise.
Earlier this year, when the series, delayed by the strikes, began production on O'ahu, Fox ordered seven backup scripts.
The first two episodes, written by showrunner Matt Kester and directed by Wells, were delivered last week and were very well received by the network for the authenticity of its portrayal of first responders on Hawaii's North Shore.
Based on that, the on-screen chemistry of the cast and the strength of the scripts of the original order and the backup versions, the decision was made to order seven more episodes. By activating the pick-up now, the series can remain in continuous production, which makes it financially more efficient.
Kester produces alongside JWP's Wells, Erin Jontow and Daniele Nathanson.
