If it does get the green light, Pride and Prejudice will be Netflix's first Austen film adaptation since 2022's Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson.
Many iconic Pride and Prejudice film adaptations have been made over the years, including a film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in 2005 (see photo) and the BBC version ten years earlier starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. The film starring Knightley was recently added to the Netflix library.
Pride and Prejudice is a novel about love and class. Written by Austen in the early 19th century, it tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, who eventually fall in love but must overcome several obstacles as Elizabeth's father searches for a male heir.
The novel often features on best-of lists and has spawned countless iconic scenes, including Firth's beloved lake scene in the BBC film adaptation.
These book adaptations are currently in fashion. Earlier this week, the BBC revealed that Janice Hadlow's The Other Bennet Sister is being made into a drama series, which tells the story of Mary Bennet. Meanwhile, Emerald Fennell is making a large-scale new version of Wuthering Heights starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
