ABC develops medical series Vital Signs

ABC develops medical series Vital Signs

ABC, the network behind Grey's Anatomy, is developing Vital Signs, a series about a fan of a Grey's-like medical drama who comes to live in it.
The project, which received multiple offers before landing at ABC, comes from Grand Hotel (US) creator/executive producer Brian Tanen, 20th Television and Kapital Entertainment.

Written by Tanen (pictured), Vital Signs is described as a reinvention of the medical series that asks: What if your favorite TV escape became your reality?

The heroine, Emmy Correll, is in a rut. She wishes her boring, disappointing life was more like her favorite medical drama Vital Signs - where the characters are life-saving heroes with endlessly exciting love lives. But when Emmy's wish comes true and she is transported INTO the series, she must question whether this new life is what she really wants. Waking up in a television series is disorienting!

Especially since Emmy is apparently a newly hired doctor in this world. But once she gets over the shock, she realizes she's seen every episode and knows what's going to happen. And that means that here, in this world, she is some kind of genius.

Tanen produces together with Aaron Kaplan of Kapital. Dylan Hammalian oversees for Kapital.

Vital Signs expands Tanen's long relationship with ABC/Disney. Early on, he worked on series such as ABC's Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives and Lifetime's Devious Maids - all produced by ABC Studios.

He then developed and produced the ABC/ABC Studios drama Grand Hotel (US), based on the Spanish series Gran Hotel. He also served as co-showrunner/executive producer on Love, Victor for all three seasons of the Hulu/20th Television series.
