Netflix has greenlit a television series starring Omar Sy in the world of the action thriller Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth.Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) is executive producer and showrunner of the eight-episode series produced by AGBO from Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, who produced the two films.
In the exciting world of Extraction, the untitled action thriller series follows a mercenary (Sy, photo) on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Caught between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each faced with trauma, betrayal and life-or-death choices.
“Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the Extraction universe,” said Peter Friedlander, VP Scripted Series at Netflix. “With Omar Sy leading the charge, our collaboration with the Russos, alongside Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more of the high-octane adventures they love from the Extraction franchise.”
This is the second time Netflix has expanded a successful original film franchise into a television series. The To All the Boys I've Loved Before film trilogy led to the successful XO series, Kitty, which was recently renewed for a third season. In the opposite direction, the streamer has a Peaky Blinders movie on the way, based on the hit television series.
The 2020 action thriller Extraction, directed by Sam Hargrave, is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks. Hemsworth stars as an Australian black ops mercenary who takes on a mission to rescue the kidnapped son of an Indian drug lord in Dhaka, Bangladesh, but the mission goes awry when he is duped.
Extraction 2, a sequel in which the main characters returned, was released in 2023. The film brings back Hemsworth's Rake, who is tasked with a new mission - rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.
As part of its partnership with Netflix, AGBO has the next upcoming film The Electric State, an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag's graphic novel starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, premiering worldwide on March 14.
