HBO Max has Crazy Rich Asians series in development

HBO Max's Crazy Rich Asians television series has officially opened a development room led by Adele Lim.
Lim will serve as executive producer, writer and showrunner. Lim co-wrote the script for Warner Bros.' hit Crazy Rich Asians, released in 2018.

In addition to Lim (pictured), executive producers will include Jon M. Chu, who directed the film, and Kevin Kwan, who wrote the novel of the same name that inspired the film and the upcoming series. Warner Bros. TV is the studio.

We understand there have been unofficial discussions with the original cast about a possible return; however, there is no creative direction for the season, so it would be too early to speculate on the storyline.

Sources close to the production confirm that the series will not replace the highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 film, as Chu and Warner Bros. Pictures continue to develop the project. HBO Max confirmed that the series will be a drama based on Kwan’s book series, which also includes China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems and Lies and Weddings.

Crazy Rich Asians (book and film) follows the love story of Chinese-American Rachel (Constance Wu) and her fiancé Nick (Henry Golding) as they travel to visit his family and friends in his native Singapore. Rachel is faced with surprises before she walks down the aisle, including the fact that Nick's family is extremely wealthy.

The ensemble cast includes Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Nico Santos, Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Jeong, Awkwafina and Lisa Lu.
