After several Star Wars series, Disney+ has put a new, non-Star Wars related series into development from Jon Favreau. Over the past decade, Jon Favreau has been the linchpin of original series with flagship The Mandalorian and its Disney+ offshoots, while also taking on classic Disney animated tropes with the live-action/photorealistic animated The Jungle Book and the photorealistic animated film The Lion King. Now, he’s combining the two with a new series in development at Disney+.
The animated/live-action hybrid centers on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a cheeky, self-absorbed bunny. Favreau (pictured) is writing and producing the project from Walt Disney Studios.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is a big deal for Walt Disney Studios. The animated character, who bears a striking resemblance to Mickey Mouse, has a fractured history with the company and played a central role in the creation of Disney’s most famous cartoon character. Oswald was created by Walt Disney in 1927 and appeared in 27 animated shorts. But after Universal took control of the character in 1928, Disney created a new character to take his place: Mickey Mouse.
Bringing Oswald home was a priority for Disney CEO Bob Iger, and The Walt Disney Co. acquired the trademark in 2006. The character entered the public domain in 2023.
Favreau created, wrote and produced The Mandalorian, which aired on Disney+ from 2019-2023. He also serves as an executive producer on the spin-offs The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. Additionally, Favreau is directing and producing Lucasfilm's upcoming feature film spin-off The Mandalorian and Grogu, set for release in May 2026.
