Julia Garner returns to the streamer after her Emmy-winning role in Ozark and a nomination for Inventing Anna. Garner is in final negotiations to play the female lead and executive produce a miniseries about the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX and the relationship between FTX co-founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and his girlfriend and business partner Caroline Ellison (Garner, pictured).
The project, based on Barack and Michelle Obama’s Netflix-based Higher Ground, is written and executive produced by Oscar winner Graham Moore (The Imitation Game), with James Ponsoldt (The Circle) as director/executive producer and Jackie Hoyt (Manhunt (2024)) as showrunner/executive producer.
Described as a wild, modern-day Bonnie and Clyde romance, the untitled FTX series centers on two hyper-intelligent, ambitious young idealists who set out to overhaul the global financial system in the blink of an eye—and then seduced, cajoled, and dared each other to steal $36 billion. The project, based on a report in New York Magazine, was conceived in 2022.
As in Inventing Anna, Garner plays a young woman convicted and sent to prison for fraud. After testifying for the prosecution in the trial of crypto kingpin Bankman-Fried, Collins was sentenced to two years in prison. She is currently serving a reduced sentence and is set to be released this summer.
Garner gained recognition for her role as Ruth Langmore in the Netflix crime drama series Ozark, for which she received critical acclaim and won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She also had roles in the FX drama series The Americans, the Netflix miniseries Maniac (2018), and the Bravo true crime series Dirty John. In 2022, she played Anna Sorokin in the Netflix miniseries Inventing Anna, for which she received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
Garner has two films coming out in July and August: Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps, in which she plays Shalla-Bal/The Silver Surfer, and Zac Cregger's horror film Weapons for Warner Bros.
