The series will see the Doctor — in the familiar TARDIS, of course — travel through time and space, solving mysteries and tackling problems alongside familiar companions and new friends. According to the BBC, younger viewers will also be introduced to the magic, wonder and excitement that are so characteristic of the Doctor Who (2024) universe, including a few kid-friendly challenges and villains.
The announcement comes as the main series of Doctor Who (2024) has just wrapped up its second season under showrunner Russell T. Davies, which received mixed reviews and ratings. Ncuti Gatwa’s version of the Doctor has since retired, and to the surprise of many, he has been replaced by Billie Piper — a former companion in the early seasons of the revival. How and why Piper will return to the lead role has not yet been revealed.
At the same time, other expansions of the Whoniverse are also in the works, including the first major live-action spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, and now this animated children’s series.
The plans were presented at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where animations around major franchises such as Stranger Things and Doctor Who (2024) received a lot of attention.
