BBC orders animated series of sci-fi series Doctor Who (2024)

The BBC has announced that it will further expand its successful Doctor Who (2024) franchise with a brand new animated spin-off specifically for young audiences.
The Doctor Who (2024) animated series will be its own adventure, separate from the main series currently being produced in partnership with Disney (and production partners Bad Wolf and BBC Studios). The animated series will be developed entirely in-house by the BBC, with the BBC currently seeking a passionate production company to take on the project.

Doctor Who (2024)

The series will see the Doctor — in the familiar TARDIS, of course — travel through time and space, solving mysteries and tackling problems alongside familiar companions and new friends. According to the BBC, younger viewers will also be introduced to the magic, wonder and excitement that are so characteristic of the Doctor Who (2024) universe, including a few kid-friendly challenges and villains.

The announcement comes as the main series of Doctor Who (2024) has just wrapped up its second season under showrunner Russell T. Davies, which received mixed reviews and ratings. Ncuti Gatwa’s version of the Doctor has since retired, and to the surprise of many, he has been replaced by Billie Piper — a former companion in the early seasons of the revival. How and why Piper will return to the lead role has not yet been revealed.

At the same time, other expansions of the Whoniverse are also in the works, including the first major live-action spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, and now this animated children’s series.

The plans were presented at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where animations around major franchises such as Stranger Things and Doctor Who (2024) received a lot of attention.

I hadn't noticed the trailer for the live-action spin-off before, but The War Between the Land and the Sea actually doesn't look bad at all. Nice style and an intriguing atmosphere. Enough to keep you curious!
