Michael Notarile and Jon M. Chu developing wrestling drama Tuesday Night Titans

Netflix is developing a new drama series titled Tuesday Night Titans, set in the gritty and competitive world of professional wrestling.
Tuesday Night Titans comes from Michael Notarile, a former writer for WWE Monday Night RAW, known for his work on series such as The Cleaning Lady (US) and The Resident. He will not only write the series, but also serve as an executive producer. The production will be in collaboration with director and producer Jon M. Chu, known for films such as Wicked and Crazy Rich Asians, and his longtime producer Caitlin Foito, via Chu’s own production banner Electric Somewhere.

Although the title is a reference to the 1980s American wrestling talk show of the same name, the series is not connected to USA Network's original Tuesday Night Titans. Netflix has yet to make an official comment on the development of the project.

Set in the high-octane, intensely staged world of professional wrestling, where showmanship and reality blur, the series centers on a determined young television writer who risks her professional reputation by recruiting her estranged childhood friend—a “jobber” (a low-level wrestler who tends to lose matches)—to the same mega-company that fascinated them both as children. Their reunion is fraught with tension as both confront personal traumas they’ve suppressed for years, ruthless colleagues on the wrestling circuit, and complicated pasts that have mixed rivalries and loyalties.

A major theme in the series is “kayfabe,” the phenomenon of maintaining wrestling stories and characters outside of the ring. In Tuesday Night Titans, this is not just a show element, but an all-pervasive reality that affects both the professional and personal lives of the main characters.

Tuesday Night Titans promises to be a multi-layered drama series that depicts the world of professional wrestling not only as a stage for spectacle, but also as an arena for personal struggle, human relationships and identity formation. With the combination of Notarile’s authentic wrestling experience and Chu’s cinematic flair, this series looks to be a promising addition to the growing number of high-quality sports dramas on Netflix.
