Apple TV+ is developing a series about socialist Claus von Bülow, who is suspected of murder.

Apple TV+ is in early development on a new limited series about Claus von Bülow, the notorious socialite accused of attempting to murder his wife Sunny von Bülow in 1981.
The series tells the intriguing and controversial story of Claus and Sunny von Bülow. Sunny fell into a coma after receiving an insulin overdose, presumably administered by her husband, Claus.

He was accused of attempted murder, but was eventually acquitted after a highly publicized trial in which attorney Alan Dershowitz defended him. Sunny remained in a vegetative state for almost 30 years until her death in 2008. Claus von Bülow died in 2019 at the age of 92.

The Von Bülow series is being written and produced by Jack Thorne (pictured), known for the Netflix limited series Adolescence, which recently received thirteen Emmy nominations, including one for Thorne himself.

The story was previously adapted into the Oscar-winning film Reversal of Fortune (1990), starring Glenn Close as Sunny von Bülow and Jeremy Irons, who won an Oscar for his role as Claus. The film is based on the book Reversal of Fortune: Inside the Von Bülow Case by Alan Dershowitz and was directed by Barbet Schroeder.

Jack Thorne, who is also working on Sam Mendes' upcoming Ringo Starr film, is considered one of the most sought-after screenwriters of the moment. His involvement and the intensity of the true story are already generating considerable interest in the industry.

It's interesting that Apple TV+ is now developing a series about Claus and Sunny von Bülow. It remains a bizarre and tragic case, one that not only captivated the media at the time but also raised questions about power, guilt, and the role of the media. With Jack Thorne writing, known for the powerful Adolescence, this could well be a nuanced and compelling retelling. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
