The duo, responsible for the most-watched English-language series on Netflix, will serve as executive producers. Also involved in the project is Jennifer Yuh Nelson, known as supervising director of the award-winning animated series Love, Death & Robots.
Grim tells the story of Jessica Harrow, a newly recruited 'Reaper' tasked with guiding souls to the afterlife. Unlike her colleagues, however, Jessica does not know how she died and remembers nothing of her life before.
As she searches for answers, she becomes increasingly entangled in the hidden structure of the universe after death. In the process, she discovers secret powers, cosmic intrigues, and a personal connection to Death itself that turns her world upside down.
The comic series, praised for its strong character-driven mythology and striking visual style, first appeared in 2022 and has grown into one of the best-selling titles in the history of Boom! Studios. The series consists of 25 issues, with the final one being released this month. Boom! Studios, founded in 2005, has already seen several comics adapted into television series, including the recent Prime Video action series Butterfly.
Gough and Millar bring their experience from successful series such as Smallville, Into the Badlands, and The Shannara Chronicles, in addition to their work on films like Spider-Man 2, the Shanghai films, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Jennifer Yuh Nelson has a long track record in animation: she began at DreamWorks, worked as Head of Story on Kung Fu Panda, and directed both Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3, making her the first woman to solo-direct a major animated film.
Grim is still in the development phase, but with this creative team, it promises to be a dark, ambitious, and visually rich animated series.
