Crime drama by Kurt Sutter in development at MGM+

The channel and streaming service MGM+ is working on a new historical drama series developed by Kurt Sutter, known as the creator of Sons of Anarchy.
The series that MGM+ is developing with Kurt Sutter has the working title Book of Kash and is set in Los Angeles at the end of the 1950s, a period when the city was on the brink of massive cultural, economic, and demographic growth. During this turbulent time, crime, power, and money increasingly clashed with the tough, uncompromising approach of the Los Angeles police, known for its zero-tolerance policy.

The story follows a private detective trying to find his way in this rapidly changing and dangerous environment. With this, Sutter explicitly ventures into the noir genre for the first time, returning to the crime drama in Los Angeles, the genre and city where his television career began with his work as a writer on The Shield. He progressed within that project to become an executive producer, then gained fame with Sons of Anarchy and later co-developed the spin-off Mayans MC (2018).

At MGM+, Book of Kash would be part of a broader lineup of crime and thriller series, including the crime drama The Westies, set in the 1980s and created by Chris Brancato, and the thriller anthology series American Hostage (working title) by Ryan and Eileen Myers.

Recently, Sutter was responsible for the historical western series The Abandons on Netflix. Although he left the series just before the end of production, it premiered last week and immediately attracted 7.3 million viewers in the opening weekend.

In addition to his collaboration with MGM+, Sutter is also involved in another major project, Nomad, which is in development at Apple TV. In this series, Jason Momoa plays the lead role. The story focuses on the violent underworld of outlaw motorcycle gangs in New Zealand. Sutter is writing this series together with Chris Collins, who will take on the role of showrunner.

All in all, this shows that Kurt Sutter is once again strongly focusing on gritty, character-driven drama series, with diverse historical settings but consistently central themes of power, violence, and moral conflicts.
