J.J. Abrams will create three series for HBO Max

HBO Max, the new streaming service from WarnerMedia, has ordered three new series that are to be developed by J.J. Abrams and his company, Bad Robot.

The three series that the streaming service has ordered are Duster, Overlook - which is a spin-off from The Shining, and a series from the Justice League Dark universe. The last one is described as a huge project, which is based on various DC comic characters.

Duster is written by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan (The Walking Dead) and will take place in the southwest of the United States in the 70s. It revolves around a courageous driver of getaway cars, who has to deal with an upcoming crime syndicate.

Overlook is based on the iconic hotel from The Shining, both the book from 1977 and the film from 1980. The story revolves around the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction. The series will be a reunion for Bad Robot, Stephen King and WarnerBros TV, who previously worked together on Castle Rock. The series will be written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown, who previously also worked on Castle Rock. Despite the coronacrisis, the writing process has already started.

The series that is based on Justice League Dark has no title as of yet. JLD had its debut in 2011 and is based on a team of magical characters such as Zatanna, Deadman, Swamp Thing and John Constantine. The last two already received their series. Swamp Thing (2019) via the DC Universe streaming service and John Constantine received his series in 2014, on the NBC network. He is still on the small screen but mostly as a cast member of DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

HBO Max is set to release in the United States next month, and it will exclusively distribute Friends, The Big Bang Theory and several WarnerMedia originals. These originals are produced by HBO, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim.
