Blackbird: Lena Horne and America in production at Showtime

Showtime is working on a new series called Blackbird: Lena Horne and America. This series will revolve around the life of entertainer and activist Lena Horne. Blackbird: Lena Horne and America tells the story of the life of Lena Horne when she was dancing in the Cotton Club at the age of sixteen, her life in WW2, the stardom of the MGM years, McCarthyism, the civil rights movement and her eventual return to Broadway.

Alex Kurtzman (Hawaii Five-0) will write the screenplay. The granddaughter of Lena Horne is also involved with the series. "Lena’s story is so intimate and at the same time, it’s the story of America – America at its most honest, most musical, most tragic and most joyous.", said granddaughter Jenny Lumet.
