Star Trek universe continues to expand

Star Trek universe continues to expand

The children will also become part of the Star Trek universe. Next to that, other Trek-related news for Trekkies.
During the 80-minute long Comic-Conx-on:Home virtual panel, there was a table reading for Star Trek: Discovery and there were talks with cast members from Star Trek: Picard. They talked about the future of Star Trek, which looks quite bright.

The news came from Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin, who both announced that the Star Trek universe will keep on expanding. After Star Trek: Picard and the announcement of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, there will be two more series. The first one is an animated series for children, Star Trek: Prodigy. This will release on Nickelodeon somewhere in 2021.

The animated series is developed by Trollhunters veterans Kevin and Dan Hageman, with Nickelodeon's EVP of the animation and development department. Ramsey Naito will be the overseer for the network. Star Trek: Prodigy follows a group of rebellious teenagers who use a worn-down Starfleet ship on their quest for adventure.

Kurtzman and Kadin also briefly talked about the unique position Star Trek is in. It is able to display a nearly utopic future, yet also talk about modern social issues.
“We’re all so proud to be working on a show that has a message that really matters, and really resonates," Kadin said. "I think what’s great when you’re working on genre [material] is that you often get to say things about current events and mask them so they don’t feel like medicine."

During the panel, we also managed to take a quick peek at Star Trek: Lower Decks. This animated series will premiere on CBS All Access on the 6th of August.

I'm just so scared that they're milking too hard now. Yes, I too have been looking forward to new ST content for years. But now a lot is coming out at once. And overkill is never good. In addition, I think that here and there they deviate very much from the canon. A track drive? Already for Kirk? Why have we never heard about that in the other series? And then that horrible Kelvin timeline of those JJ Abrams from the last movies. That was the biggest mistake. Of course I will give everything a chance. I'm good enough for that. And with Discovery they are heading into the future enormously, so they can no longer spend much on the canon. And I am very curious about that future. But I think I'll skip those cartoons. That is not about anything anymore :-)

I didn't skip the Lower Decks cartoon series after all. I couldn't help but say "Star Trek" in the title :-) And it turns out to be unexpectedly funny. You can almost call it a parody. Still nice ...
