In order to save the family, Maria Anna takes a drastic decision: she disguises herself as her brother and manages to impress the public in Vienna and even the court of Emperor Joseph II. Her talent and charisma make her immensely popular, but also arouse the envy of Antonio Salieri, Mozart's famous rival.
As Maria Anna becomes increasingly entangled in her own deception, she tries to protect her family and at the same time preserve her own identity. Her relationship with Salieri, which is full of tension and intrigue, plays an important role in this.
The series does not want to be yet another version of Amadeus, but rather a modern and innovative story, aimed at a younger audience. Showrunner Andreas Gutzeit and director Clara Zoë My-Linh von Arnim emphasize the forgotten role of women in music history and how Maria Anna's talent may even have influenced her brother's compositions.
In addition to historical intrigue, the series also promises to be musically interesting. Composer Jessica De Rooij gives well-known works by Mozart a contemporary twist, making the series surprisingly fresh and accessible for contemporary viewers.
The cast includes well-known names from the German and international film and television world, which gives the series a broad appeal.
The production is a collaboration between German and Austrian public broadcasters (ARD and ORF) and is sold internationally by Bavaria Media and Beta Film.
