Winners series of the year election 2019

Winners series of the year election 2019

More votes have been cast than in 2018. We will happily release who won and who lost and other numbers of 2019.
From January 6 to February 3, the MySeries readers could vote for their favourite series in fifteen categories. This year two new categories were added and one category, guilty pleasure, was removed.

Our fantastic writers had nominated ten series in each category, based on your votes and the votes of the MySeries editorial team. If you did not agree with the nominated series you could always use a wild card. There were also two new categories, best actor and best actress.

In some categories it was actually immediately clear which series would win. But in other categories, it was exciting right up to the last minute who would eventually go for the coveted, non-existent, trophy of the MySeries Awards. What we can conclude is that Netflix is the platform from which most series were nominated, but they definitely didn't win most categories.

These are the results of the MySeries of the year 2019 elections

A whopping 29413 votes were cast, which is almost 5000 times more than last year. We also asked on which screen you watch series and how you watch them. 642 (89%) still watches series on a television screen. Of the voters, 554 (77%) watch streaming services. But we won't bore you with interesting statistics anymore, below you can find the results of this year.

Best actress of 2019

8959 beste actress

We start with the first new category, which was best actress. It was possible to vote for six actresses. But almost right after the first votes were cast, Elisabeth Moss managed to hold onto the lead. After 1916 votes we can now announce the top six. Unfortunately it was not technically possible to use a Wild Card in this category.

Down below you can find the top 6 of the 'best actress' category of 2019:

1. Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale, Hulu) – 496 votes (26%)
2. Elise Schaap (Familie Kruys, RTL 4) – 423 votes (22%)
3. Helen McCory (Peaky Blinders, BBC One) – 298 votes (16%)
4. Najwa Nimri (Vis a Vis, Antena 3) – 249 votes (13%)
5. Ruth Wilson (His Dark Materials, BBC One) – 241 votes (13%)
6. Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies, HBO) – 209 votes (11%)

Best actor of 2019

8959 best actor

The second new category is best actor. Even more clearly than with the actresses, a winner could be seen from the start. The men received slightly more votes, 1935, than the women. Peter Dinklage received the most votes. Unfortunately it was not technically possible to use a Wild Card in this category either.

Down below you can find the top 6 of the 'best actor' category of 2019:

1. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, HBO) – 705 votes (36%)
2. Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, BBC One) – 548 votes (28%)
3. Live Schreiber (Ray Donovan, Showtime) – 231 votes (12%)
4. Jharrel Kerome (When They See Us, Netflix) – 213 votes (11%)
5. Jared Harris (Chernobyl, HBO) – 187 votes (10%)
6. Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty, BBC One) - 51 votes (3%)

Best non-English series of 2019

8959 non-English

This category was almost deleted, just like the guilty pleasure one. But after many questions from the MySeries members, we decided to keep it in. And here it was very clear who would win. And actually it was to be expected. In 2018 this series did not participate because no episodes had been released, but this year La Casa de Papel was nominated in no less than four categories and they've won quite a few.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'non-English' category of 2019:

1. La Casa de Papel (Netflix) – 840 votes (44%)
2. Vis a Vis (Antena 3) – 235 votes (12%)
3. Dark (Netflix) – 227 votes (12%)
4. The Rain (Netflix) – 183 votes (10%)
5. Elite (Netflix) – 114 votes (6%)

The wildcard with the most votes was Marianne with 3 votes!

Most disappointing series of 2019

8959 teleurstellende

The question was not whether this series would win a category, but in which category would the HBO fantasy series end up highest. And I think it's no surprise that Game of Thrones, nominated in four categories, won this anti-prize. No matter how good the series was, most fans were very disappointed in the final eighth season. But the HBO series was closely followed by The Walking Dead and De Luizenmoeder (Dutch series that received international critic praise during the release of the first season). The fantasy series has therefore "won" the number two and three with only one percent difference.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'most disappointing' category of 2019:

1. Game of Thrones (HBO) - 311 votes (17%)
2. The Walking Dead (AMC) – 303 votes (16%)
3. De Luizenmoeder (AVROTROS) – 288 votes (16%)
4. 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) – 281 votes (15%)
5. The 100 (The CW) – 181 votes (10%)

The wildcard with most votes in this category is La Casa de Papel with 4 votes!

Best ended series of 2019

8959 best beeindigde

In this category it was immediately clear from the start who was going to win the main prize. This is the third category, best actor and most disappointing series, in which this series ends in the #1 spot. Whether that is justified or not, I leave completely in the middle. But almost 50 percent of voters can't be wrong, right?

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best ended' category of 2019:

1. Game of Thrones (HBO) – 963 votes (47%)
2. The Big Bang Theory (CBS) – 335 votes (16%)
3. Orange Is the New Black (Netflix) – 327 votes (16%)
4. Poldark (BBC One) – 108 votes (5%)
5. Jessica Jones (Netflix) – 103 votes (5%)

The wildcard in this category with most votes is Suits with 12 votes!

Best animated series of 2019

8959 beste animatie

No tension this year, unlike last year. This year it is clear that grandfather and grandson would live with the first prize. This category did receive the least number of votes, 1339 votes were cast for an animated series. But there is one thing that particularly stood out in this category: a Wild Card has ended up in the top ten. Family Guy received more votes than the nominated series Dororo.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best animated series' category of 2019:

1. Rick and Morty (Adult Swim) – 322 votes (24%)
2. Love, Death & Robots (Netflix) – 165 votes (12%)
3. The Dragon Prince (Netflix) – 147 votes (11%)
4. Disenchantment (Netflix) – 139 votes (10%)
5. BoJack Horseman (Netflix) – 127 votes (9%)

The wildcard in this category with most votes is Family Guy with 20 votes!

Best bingewatch series of 2019

8959 beste binge

As a writer of this post, I naturally do not want to express my opinion. But I was surprised by the winner in this category. Provided that I am very fond of the Lucifer series, but bingewatch worthy? Perhaps that is because the series was taken over by Netflix from FOX? But the voter is always right, so I will have to accept this result. Even though the winner has won from the number two with only one percent difference.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best bingewatch' category of 2019:

1. Lucifer (Netflix, voorheen FOX) – 452 votes (22%)
2. La Casa de Papel (Netflix) – 443 votes (21%)
3. Stranger Things (Netflix) – 348 votes (17%)
4. The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu) – 195 votes (9%)
5. Chernobyl (HBO) – 188 votes (9%)

The wildcard in this category with most votes is Grey's Anatomy with 5 votes!

Best superhero series of 2019

8959 beste superhelden

A long time ago I stopped watching this superhero. And last year it did not even appear in the list of nominees, but it won a place in the top ten through a Wild Card. And now this green superhero is the number one with a big margin. How, then, I doubt. Is the final season that good? And is it possible that this will be added to the list of best ended series next year?

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best superhero' category of 2019:

1. Arrow (The CW) – 358 votes(20%)
2. Marvel's The Punisher (Netflix) – 280 votes (15%)
3. The Umbrella Academy (Netflix) – 266 votes (15%)
4. The Flash (2014) (The CW) – 220 votes (12%)
5. Jessica Jones (Netflix) – 189 votes (10%)

The wildcard in this category with most votes is Supergirl with 8 votes!

Best science-fiction series of 2019

8959 beste sci fi

The number one from last year is the number two from this year. Last year the number one did not appear in the list at all simply because there were no episodes released in 2018. The science-fiction series of Netflix Stranger Things was nominated in two categories this year and Stranger Things can call itself a justified winner. At least I think so.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best science-fiction' category of 2019:

1. Stranger Things (Netflix) – 558 votes (28%)
2. The 100 (The CW) – 470 votes (23%)
3. The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu) – 359 votes (18%)
4. The Mandalorian (Disney+) – 241 votes (12%)
5. Star Trek: Discovery (CBS All Access) – 112 votes (6%)

The wildcard in this category with most votes is The Expanse with 11 votes!

Best crime series of 2019

8959 beste misdaad

We have already crowned the winner in this category as a winner in a different category. La Casa de Papel wins the prize for best crime series of 2019. The Spanish-language series did get some competition from the number two, but never really enough to threaten the final profit. But perhaps this is not the last category in which we will see the paper house (translation) of Netflix win.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best crime' category of 2019:

1. La Casa de Papel (Netflix) – 659 votes (32%)
2. Peaky Blinders (BBC One) – 558 votes (27%)
3. Killing Eve (BBC America) – 248 votes(12%)
4. Ray Donovan (Showtime) – 121 votes(6%)
5. True Detective (HBO) – 107 votes(5%)

The wildcard in this category with most votes is Criminal Minds with 11 votes!

Best limited and anthologyseries of 2019

8959 beste mini

For this category, it was actually clear which series was going to win as well. The stumbling block of the English language turned out not to be enough of a stumbling block to take the win with a huge lead. The series about the true Chernobyl disaster has left a big impression on viewers. Chernobyl may call itself a justified winner, although the number two could've been a contendor for the title just as well.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best mini and anthology' category of 2019:

1. Chernobyl (HBO) – 673 votes (34%)
2. When They See Us (Netflix) – 362 votes(18%)
3. Black Mirror (Netflix) – 263 votes(13%)
4. Unbelievable ( Netflix) – 178 stemmen (9%)
5. True Detective (HBO) – 168 stemmen (9%)
The wildcard in this category with most votes is De 12 van Schouwendam with 7 votes!

Beste Dutch series of 2019

8959 beste Nederlandse

From the start it was clear that this series would not receive any opposition. The series won with almost 50 percent of the votes with absolute force majeure. Numbers two and three aren't bad series, however. But the Belgian-Dutch series Undercover, which can be seen on Netflix in the Netherlands and the rest of the world, may call itself the proud winner of the (non-existent) MySeries trophy.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best Dutch' category of 2019:

1. Undercover (Eén) – 882 votes (47%)
2. Het geheime dagboek van Hendrik Groen (Omroep Max) – 280 votes (15%)
3. Judas (Videoland) – 179 votes (10%)
4. Flikken Rotterdam (AVROTROS) – 158 votes (8%)
5. De twaalf (Eén) – 135 votes (7%)
The wildcard in this category with most votes is Flikken Maastricht with 15 votes!

Best comedy series of 2019

8959 beste komedie

The only category in this list of which I have not seen one series in 2019. I therefore refrain from commenting because I have no idea what most series are about at all. Except that they should be hilarious. The Big Bang Theory is the long-running comedy series that ended in 2019. The acclaimed and award-winning series Fleabag finished in a disappointing seventh place.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best comedy' category of 2019:

1. The Big Bang Theory (CBS) – 617 votes (31%)
2. Modern Family (ABC) – 309 votes (16%)
3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (NBC) – 204 votes (10%)
4. The Good Place (NBC) – 183 votes (9%)
5. After Life (Netflix) – 175 votes (9%)

The wildcards in this category with most votes are Sex Education and Atypical with 14 votes!

Beste Nieuwe serie van 2019

8959 beste nieuwe serie

Who would run away with this coveted prize. Would it be When They See Us, Unbelievable, The Mandelorian or Sex Education? Now that the votes have been counted and the jury has made a decision, it appears to be a not so surprising series; Chernobyl may also collect the prize in this category.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best new series' category of 2019:

1. Chernobyl (HBO) – 490 votes (23%)
2. Sex Education (Netflix) – 361 votes (17%)
3. The Mandalorian (Disney+) – 330 votes (16%)
4. When They See Us (Netflix) – 261 votes (12%)
5. Unbelievable (Netflix) – 138 votes (7%)
The wildcard in this category with most votes is The Witcher with 20 votes!

Beste Serie van 2019

8959 beste serie

And then, drum roll, the best series of 2019 ... Until the final moment it was not yet clear who would eventually win the grand prize. Was it La Casa de Papel or would it be Game of Thrones? Until a few days before you were no longer able to vote, even Chernobyl could still claim the win. But the first-mentioned series eventually took the lead and they switched between first and second place a couple of times. But after a tough neck and neck race and by means of a photo finish, the winner still became La Casa de Papel.

Down below you can find the top 5 of the 'best series' category of 2019:

1. La Casa de Papel (Netflix) – 430 votes (17%)
2. Game of Thrones (HBO) – 426 votes (17%)
3. Chernobyl (HBO) – 366 votes (14%)
4. Peaky Blinders (BBC One) – 273 votes (11%)
5. The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu) – 240 votes (9%)

The wildcard in this category with most votes is once again The Witcher with 20 votes!
