Pilot order for father/son comedy series from Damon Wayans Sr. and Jr. at CBS

Pilot order for father/son comedy series from Damon Wayans Sr. and Jr. at CBS

CBS has its first comedy pilot order this season, and it went to Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.
Four months after news broke that the father-son project is in development at CBS, the multi-camera comedy series remains untitled. The series is co-written by Wayans Sr. and Kevin Hench, former executive producer of Last Man Standing.

It revolves around a legendary talk radio host and happily divorced 'Poppa' (father), played by Wayans Sr., whose position at work is challenged when a new female co-host is hired. At home, where he still has to raise his adult son (Wayans Jr.), he is a brilliant dreamer who tries to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.

The Wayans father/son comedy series joins the two pilot dramas CBS is ordering this season: Elsbeth, starring Carrie Preston, and Matlock, starring Kathy Bates. The order comes in a resurgence of multi-camera comedy series fueled by the recent success of shows like Night Court (2023) and That '90s Show.

This is the Wayans' return to comedy series after co-creating, producing and starring in My Wife and Kids, which ran for five seasons from 2001 to 2005 on ABC. It is in that series that his son, Wayans Jr, made his television acting debut with a major recurring role. He then starred in the comedy series Happy Endings and New Girl before starring in the CBS sitcom Happy Together (2018).

That CBS sitcom lasted one season, but gave fans a taste of what the Wayans' father-son dynamic would look like on screen when Wayans guest-starred as Wayans Jr.'s father in an episode titled "Like Father, Like Son." '.

Wayan Jr. (pictured), who also appeared on his father's Showtime sketch comedy series The Underground, also appeared on the then-CBS All Access (now Paramount+) series The Twilight Zone (2019) and the EPIX limited series The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair with Patrick Dempsey. Wayan Jr. is also an executive producer of the upcoming drama series Glamorous.

Wayans is a four-time Emmy nominee who created and starred in the iconic sketch series In Living Color. He recently played the role of Roger Murtaugh in FOX's Lethal Weapon series.

In addition to his long stint as executive producer on Tim Allen's Last Man Standing, Hench Cristela and Mr. Iglesias co-created and produced. He is currently an executive producer of Allen's new Disney+ series The Santa Clauses.

I enjoyed most of The Wayans Brothers films and series. This family got the most out of it with just stupid humor. I will never forget White Chicks, Scary Movie and Little Man in particular.
