The documentary, directed by award-winning Finnish filmmaker Sami Kieksi and co-written by Joni Soila, highlights the young hacker's rise to global notoriety. At just fifteen years old, Kivimäki carried out multiple large-scale cyberattacks.
He forced an American passenger jet into an emergency landing, shut down the global PlayStation network, and orchestrated life-threatening SWAT raids, including a targeted operation against the family of an FBI agent. His actions put him on the radar of international security agencies and made him the target of a global manhunt.
The series shows how the FBI ultimately tracked him down in a Las Vegas casino. His crimes are examined not only from the perspective of the authorities but also through the personal testimonies of victims who directly faced the consequences of his actions.
Cybersecurity experts, FBI agents, SWAT team members, internationally renowned hackers, and journalists are featured. Among them are renowned names such as Allison Nixon, Brian Krebs, Joe Tidy, and Mikko Hyppönen, whose insights offer a profound international perspective on cybersecurity.
The documentary is not just a thrilling story about a brilliant but derailed teenager; it is, above all, a compelling investigation into the growing threat of cybercrime. The filmmakers deliver an urgent message about the importance of digital security in a world where the lines between reality and virtual threats are increasingly blurred.
Director Sami Kieksi underscores the project's timely nature by stating that the consequences of cybercrime are often underestimated, yet can be extremely serious and life-changing. He hopes the series will spark broad public debate. His collaboration with internationally respected specialists has enriched the documentary with unique insights and credibility.
