The thriller series is based on the Dutch series Nieuwe Buren (pictured) and fits Eagle Eye's strategy to turn European hit series into series for major English-speaking markets, following Channel 4's Suspect, which is based on a Belgian series, and ITV's Professor T (UK), which is based on a series from Denmark.
American streamer Starz and British network Channel 4, who have never produced together before, describe The Couple Next Door as a "psychological drama, exploring the claustrophobia of the suburbs and the consequences of chasing your darkest desires".
Tomlinson (pictured) is best known as Demelza Poldark opposite Aidan Turner in five seasons of the BBC drama Poldark. Other roles include Stephen Merchant's comedy-drama series The Outlaws and Netflix's upcoming series adaptation of David Nicholls' One Day.
Scottish actor Heughan (pictured below) is preparing for the seventh season of Starz hit Outlander, in which he plays Jamie Fraser. He recently made headlines when his memoir revealed how a brutal rape scene in the first season of Outlander had negatively affected him.
Marcella writer David Allison is working on The Couple Next Door, Dries Vos of Professor T (UK) is directing and executive producers are Jo McGrath, Walter Iuzzolino and Alison Kee.
The series was commissioned by Channel 4's Caroline Hollick and Rebecca Holdsworth. Karen Bailey, EVP of Programming, is overseeing The Couple Next Door for Starz, and it will be distributed by Beta Film.
