Night Sky uses science fiction as a backdrop. Fans of action-packed sci-fi should skip Night Sky. This season is much more about the older couple Irene (Sissy Spacek, Bloodline) and Franklin (J.K. Simmons, The Closer). Irene and Franklin have made a discovery that no one should know about. They found a transport to another galaxy. It once gave hope for a new and different life. But because nothing happened at all for years, that hope has evaporated. Until suddenly a strange and bloodied young man is found by Irene.
Night Sky is een sociaal drama waarin sciencefiction is toegevoegd.
Before then, Irene's health was ailing. However, after the appearance of Jude (Chai Hansen, The 100), the unknown man, her health is improving. The skeptical and suspicious Franklin looks on with sorrow. He doesn't trust Jude, but also sees what it does to Irene. Jude's background remains unclear for a long time. Episode after episode we get more insight into what happened. The past of Irene and Franklin is also slowly unraveled. The struggle with their son's death is rekindled by Jude. When their neighbor and great-grandchild show up, it becomes increasingly difficult for the trio to keep their secret safe.
The second story of the series revolves around the Argentinian Stella (Juliette Zylberberg, Post Mortem) and her daughter Toni (Rochio Hernández). Stella has a secret. She has the same portal as the one Irene and Franklin found. However, Stella knows the secret. When a brutal, strange man visits their remote home, Stella and her daughter go hunting. The hunt is aimed at someone who has left the sect or cult. It is of course inevitable that this story is intertwined with the story of Irene and Franklin.
The slow build up in the story will not be to the liking of everyone.
Night Sky is a social drama with science fiction moments. The slowly built tension is mainly brought by the story of Stella and Toni. By getting more background from the Argentinian duo, it becomes increasingly clear what is going on, also with Jude, Irene and Franklin. The slow build-up in the story will not be to the liking of everyone. I myself found it refreshing in a time when everything, especially science fiction, has to be fast, flashy, and full of action. Night Sky is in that respect a nice counterpart to all that violence.
Because of that slow build-up, there is plenty of room for the beautiful acting of Spacek and Simmons. Their experience splashes off the screen. Their relationship as Irene and Franklin feels familiar. I think everyone knows an aging couple in which the woman is apparently sweet and nice and the man is a bit grumpy and blunt. The relationship between the neighbor and Franklin provides humor, but also characteristic male friendship. The granddaughter and Jude (I would say of course) take care of the romantic never. The question of whether or not it will become something is constantly hanging over those two. That question is actually the question for the entire series. This first season requires more explanation and a sequel. Especially with an ending like this, a second season is an absolute must.
