Nobody Wants This is a fun romantic comedy made by Erin Foster and is noted as one of the better series on Netflix. Yup, from time to time I make time for an 'out of my comfort zone' series and here we are. This series has sparked my curiosity because there are some pretty good things said about it. So let's take a look at what this series has been doing to many Netflix viewers for a while now...
Nobody Wants This starts with two sisters Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Morgan (Justine Lupe) who run a podcast together. In this podcast they talk quite frankly about sex and relationships. They are quite popular on social media and are about to make a breakthrough. Yet both sisters don't really have much luck in love despite looking quite good and being successful. Joanne in particular secretly hopes to meet a man who will blow her away. However, during a dinner with one of her good friends (Sherry Cola), she comes into contact with the endearing Noah (Adam Brody). Noah is a recently divorced man and was also invited to her home by that same mutual friend, along with other singles.
They click from the first moment and Joanne falls head over heels for him. What she doesn't know is that Noah is in fact a Jewish rabbi and he lives in a very different environment in terms of values and norms. Joanne is a straight talker while Noah is more thoughtful and honest. Yet Noah also falls for Joanne's charms and they decide to give their love a chance together. This is the beginning of their struggle to maintain their relationship against all kinds of prejudices and different-thinking family members and friends.
What she doesn't know is that Noah is in fact a Jewish rabbi and he lives in a very different environment in terms of values and norms.
To start with, the first thing you notice is that this series is incredibly easy to watch. I finished this series in no time and that means that the narrative structure is quite good. The series has a good balance between serious and comedic moments and therefore the series remains largely believable and compelling. The tricky themes that are inextricably linked to this story are also presented to the viewer in a pleasant way.
The two lead actors play it wonderfully, making you feel the chemistry between these two opposites from the very beginning. This alone is reason enough to start watching. You also have little to complain about the rest of the cast. This ranges from the rather alternative mother of Joanne (Stephanie Faracy), to the clumsy but good-hearted brother of Noah (Timothy Simons). All the characters have something nice about them that never makes them seem too annoying or boring.
Well, is this series really that good? Quite well, but of course this series also has a number of weak points.
As a first small point you can say that sisters Joanne and Morgan are quite materialistic in nature and therefore come across as rather self-centered and conceited. Of course, this is a representation of the modern 'American' woman and may not necessarily be labeled as negative or 'woke'. But in some scenes this can cause some eye-rolling moments. However, Joanne's character is surprisingly confronted with herself a number of times. That's a good thing, of course, because it means we see more of her and she doesn't remain a one-sided character forever.
The second point is that towards the end of the series the interest wanes somewhat because there are fewer interesting or subtle plot twists. The first part of the episodes are very strong, but unfortunately the series cannot maintain this until the end. Towards the end the clichés pile up more and more and it ends in a more moderate manner. And as with most series these days, this one also has a few too many episodes than necessary.
Mind you, all in all this series isn't bad. Again, it's more a matter of whether you like this species or not. If you like contemporary romantic series then I think you should give this one a chance. It is therefore difficult to give a score. It may be strange that I 'only' give it a 6.5, but that's because towards the end it became too banal and cliché for me. However, don't let this put you off if you really like romantic series. Nobody Wants This is entertaining, light-hearted and very easy to watch.
So take a look and judge for yourself!
