Obliterated - Season 1

Obliterated is a series about elite soldiers who have to save Las Vegas from a bomb. Despite the successful team behind Cobra Kai, the series is very disappointing due to its lame humor, exaggerated action, one-dimensional characters and illogical plot.
Obliterated is an action comedy that follows the story of a team of elite American soldiers who must save Las Vegas from a nuclear bomb, while all under the influence of alcohol, drugs and other substances. The series was created by the same team responsible for Cobra Kai, the popular spin-off of The Karate Kid. But where Cobra Kai was a charming and clever satire on '80s nostalgia, Obliterated is a lame and silly attempt to parody the action films of the '90s.

The series consists of eight episodes of approximately 45 minutes each, all taking place in one long night. The main characters are Ava Winters (Shelley Hennig, Unfriended), a CIA agent in charge of the operation, Chad McKnight (Nick Zano, The Final Destination), an arrogant Navy Seal who has a crush on Ava, Trunk (Terrence Terrell , B Positive), Chad's funny sidekick, Angela Gomez (Paola Lázaro, The Walking Dead), a marksman who isn't afraid to shoot, Maya Lerner (Kimi Rutledge, Half Sisters), an NSA hacker in love with Chad, Paul Yung (Eugene Kim, General Hospital), an Air Force pilot who accidentally eats a hallucinogenic guacamole, and Haggerty (C. Thomas Howell, SEAL Team), a bomb expert who is missing a thumb. Together they must take on Ivan Koslov (Costa Ronin), a Russian arms dealer who has sold a fake bomb to a terrorist who wants to blow up Las Vegas.

The problem with Obliterated is that it's not funny, exciting or original. The humor mainly consists of lame jokes about genitals, drugs and sex, which quickly get boring. The action is exaggerated and unrealistic, with lots of shooting, explosions and chases, which have no impact whatsoever. The characters are one-dimensional and unsympathetic, with little depth or development. The plot is illogical and predictable, with many holes and clichés. The series may try to criticize American patriotism and exceptionalism, but it fails because it is too superficial and unbelievable.

Obliterated is a series that serves no purpose, except perhaps to entertain the viewer with a few cheap laughs. But even that doesn't work, because the series is too long-winded and repetitive to remain interesting. The viewer quickly feels like they are the only sober person in the room, and that is not a pleasant place to be. Obliterated is one of the worst series of last year, and a waste of time and talent. It is better to avoid this series and watch something else on Netflix.

Fortunately, the series has ended and there will not be a second season.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.

I have now watched the series myself and have to say that I actually quite enjoyed it (and so did a lot of people on IMDB). The humor is lame at times, but I actually enjoy that every now and then. I can imagine that this is not a series for everyone, but I would recommend fans of, for example, The Hangover-like humor to try it and not immediately write it off based on this review

Totally agree. You have to like the humor, but it was good at times. Not a series that will be in my top 10, but I had a great time and I'm a bit disappointed that there won't be a second season.

Same here. This is a nice series to watch in between when you're done or need some rest from the slightly heavier series.
