Almost a year after the return of the second season, Hulu unveiled the teaser for the third season. While the video doesn't show much of the third season, it does offer a glimpse into the arrival of Meryl Streep's new character. The Only Murders in the Building season three teaser also shows the first footage of Paul Rudd's return, following his cameo appearance at the end of last season.
While the Only Murders in the Building season three teaser may not reveal much about the general take on the season, it does offer some insight into what's in store for Streep. The footage shows Streep taking part in a reading of the script for the Broadway play that Short's Oliver turned out to be directing at the end of Only Murders in the Building season two, which is where Paul Rudd's apparent demise took place.
Observant viewers will be sure to notice the name sign for Streep in the Only Murders in the Building season 3 teaser that has two names, suggesting she plays both an actor and a character in Oliver's play. Although the sign is just out of frame in the footage, it appears to have a different name than that of the Oscar-winning star, suggesting she won't be playing a fictionalized version of herself, as was the case with Amy Schumer and Sting in the earlier seasons of the hit series.
It's currently unclear how important Streep is to Only Murders in the Building season three, but it seems unlikely that she'll only have a supporting role in the Hulu series. In the second-season finale episode, Martin's Charles-Haden warned Rudd's Ben to stay away from an unidentified female person, which the theories initially pointed in the direction of his daughter.
However, given Streep's involvement in the play, it seems just as likely that it's her character he's warning about. Since previous seasons of the series premiered just over a year after filming began, it seems likely that audiences will have to wait until 2024 to learn more about Streep's role in Season Three's Only Murders in the Building.
