The sixth season has been delayed due to the corona pandemic, which is why the Droughtlander remains for longer than planned. There is good news for the time-travelling drama series, however. There's going to be a seventh season and production on the sixth is currently ongoing. The seventh season will have twelve episodes, which is the same as the previous four seasons.
Matthew B. Roberts will remain showrunner and Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin will also return to the seventh season, which is based on An Echo in the Bone. That is the seventh book in the book series with the same name by Diana Gabaldon.

In 2014, the eighth book was released as Written in My Own Heart's Blood and the ninth part Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone is still awaiting publication. It hasn't been revealed whether these latest two books will also be adapted for the television series. It hasn't been revealed when the sixth season is set to release.
