Outlander - Season 4

It took a while before we were able to watch the new season of Outlander, we had to wait quite some time for the fourth season: 11 months to be exact. But on 4 November 2018 the time had come: the first episode could be watched on Ziggo. Too bad I had to wait a week before each new episode... And each week I was so curious to see what happens next with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan).

Before you read on, this review contains spoilers if you haven't seen season 3 yet!

In the last episode of season 3 we saw Claire and Jamie together on a beach in The New World. A new chapter in their lives together, after having been apart for so many years. In season 4 this story continues, but fortunately some time has passed and we see Claire, Jamie and Young Ian (John Bell) in America. They don’t have a place to stay yet, but everything else is going well: they have found each other again, no one is hurt and they have the gems which are worth a lot of money. But that doesn't mean everything is going well in America. Political unrest is brewing and the war for independence is not far away. Claire knows what will come and is very aware of the situation. Her words “We are on the wrong side of history again” reflect this quite well.

Furthermore, we see Brianna who stayed behind in her own time. She and Roger are trying to maintain a relationship despite the large distance between Boston and Scotland. When they travel together to a Scottish festival in America, Brianna starts to wonder how her mother is doing and starts to have misgivings. When she discovers that a terrible thing will happen to Claire and Jamie, she has no choice but to try to follow her mother back in time to warn them.

In the fourth season there are two story lines, side by side: The one of Claire and Jamie and of Brianna and Roger. They are similar but they take place in different times. The one thing we were hoping for in previous seasons, Claire and Jamie finding each other again and finally staying together, is the same thing we are hoping for now with Brianna and Roger. Still, both story lines manage to keep my attention.

But still, in each episode there is a situation or problem that needs to be resolved. Besides the main theme of this season, in each episode a new problem is created that needs to be fixed. That starts to annoy me a bit. I understand there must be some suspense, but sometimes it becomes a bit tedious or predictable. That doesn't alter the fact that the acting is excellent and all the main characters look great. The costumes, the locations and settings are fantastic. And despite the negative points, it remains exciting and each week I could be found in front of the TV to watch the new episode.

The grade has become a 7.5 and not an 8, because the first few seasons were more suspenseful. The story line becomes more elaborate which makes the whole season interesting, but I wasn't as much on the edge of my seat like in previous seasons. But I was still happy to learn that there will be at least two more seasons of Outlander. Although they will become a bit shorter: 12 episodes instead of 13. When the fifth season will be broadcast, is not yet known.
