Outlander - Season 4

Claire: It's inscribed. "Da mi basia mille."
Jamie: Give me a thousand kisses...
Claire: ...And I'll give you a thousand more....

It's been a few years since I was introduced to the world called Outlander. How I got caught up in the web of love from Jamie, Claire, Brianna, Roger and Frank. After the first few episodes of the first season, I wanted more. So I expanded my bookcase with the complete traveler series. That includes my favorite book, book four: The Far Coast. So I had high expectations for season four, because making it like it is in the book, they can never do that, or so I thought... Because I enjoyed it so much.

In season three, we saw Jamie and Claire, shipwrecked, and wash up on a beach in America. This creates a chance for a new life for them, a second chance. No more chases from Scotland, no dangers, no problems. Simply, a new life in a new country. At least for Jamie, because Claire knows the country, its inhabitants and its history.

But Claire also could not expect to end up in a world of slavery. When Jamie and Claire arrive at Jamie's Aunt Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy, Orphan Black) after a miserable boat trip, that newfound peace also seems short-lived. Claire can't get used to living 200 years back in time, putting Jamie, Young Ian and herself in danger. They have no choice but to move further into America. When Jamie also gets a piece of land thrown into his lap, luck seems to be smiling on them again.

Fortunately, she is still in contact with Roger, the historian who is stuck in the past

Outlander wouldn't be Outlander if it weren't for two worlds running parallel next to each other in this season. On the one hand, we follow the lives of Jamie, Claire, Young Ian and Fergus. And in the sixties, we follow the lives of Brianna and Roger. Brianna struggles with the loss of both her parents. Her father is now deceased and her mother lives 200 years back in time. Then she also has her biological father: Jamie Fraser. The uncertainty about her mother's fate and the question of whether her mother has found Jamie keep her very busy. Fortunately, she is still in contact with Roger, the historian who is figuratively stuck in the past.

As I wrote before, book four is my favourite. Fortunately, I can add season four to that. Because what a great story the creators have made of it. A story that deviates completely from the books here and there, but never gets boring. I enjoyed the storylines and found it a relief to not just follow the lives of Jamie and Claire. The emphasis this season is more on the other characters in the complete story. Not everyone will agree with me. That is allowed, so many stories, so many people, so many preferences. For me, this season has meant falling in love all over again with the story that sprang from the mind and pen of Diana Gabaldon in the 1990s.
