Peacemaker (2022) - Season 1

Director James Gunn has made a successful reboot of The Suicide Squad (2021) in 2021. One of the trendsetters from this film now gets the chance to stand on his own two feet and he does that quite well. I am of course talking about Peacemaker (2022).
I normally always start my review with a breakdown of what the series is about, who the characters are and what I personally think of the series. This time I will immediately tell you why you should definitely watch this series. Peacemaker (2022) is going to steal your hearts with one of the most awesome intros I've ever seen! Accompanied by the great soundtrack 'Do You Wanna Taste It' by the Norwegian glam metal band Wig Wam, the viewer is taken along through a fantastic and above all hilarious choreography in which the entire cast participates in great fun. I watched all episodes without skipping the intro because that would be disrespectful to the creators of this brilliant idea. In addition, the intro immediately sets the tone for what you can expect from the series. I was going to share the intro with you almost at the end of my review instead of the trailer of this series, but go see it for yourself.

The review will now proceed normally as you are used to from me. Peacemaker (2022) picks up where The Suicide Squad (2021) film left off. In a closing credits scene of the film, John Cena is seen lying in the hospital as Peacemaker, recovering from his run-in with Bloodsport (Idris Elba, Luther). Christopher Smith alias Peacemaker has now healed miraculously quickly from his injuries and can go home with a taxi after a number of silly jokes against the cleaner. Well, home, it's an American trailer where he stays and soon he is asked there by a group of special agents to participate in a mission called Project Butterfly. Since Peacemaker still has a bomb in his head that could be activated at any moment if he disobeys, he has few choices but to help with this mission.

Before he starts, one thing is even more important and that is meeting his best friend again. During the hospital stay, this friend lived with Peacemaker's father, Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick, Goliath). Peacemaker's very best friend is an eagle named Eagly. The reunion between these two is touching as they hug each other passionately. You read that right, this series does not shy away from absurd situations and that is typical of James Gunn if you are a little familiar with his previous work. In addition to bland, sexist, and absurd humor, there is also plenty of room for brutal and explicit violence. The combination really appeals to me and throughout the episodes they managed to find a good balance. If you don't like this kind of humor then I can imagine that it will irritate you in the long run, but personally, I have not experienced it that way.

In Peacemaker (2022), things are different from the standard formula and that feels refreshing. If you've seen The Suicide Squad (2021) you already know a number of characters and if you don't know the film, that's no problem either. At the start of the series, you're presented with a refresher for everyone to follow. Then there is a recurring story throughout the episodes and it is about the mission just mentioned. It's hard to describe exactly how this unfolds without giving away spoilers, but take it from me that there is no shortage of action and humor. During the mission, Peacemaker is not alone and teams up with some characters from the previous movie, combined with some fresh blood. One of these new faces is Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks, Orange Is the New Black). There is a nice chemistry between these two characters, but that actually applies to the entire cast. You can clearly see that they had a lot of fun making this series. John Cena will never be the best actor, but he does his best and this series is not about the deep dialogue either. He does have good timing when it comes to jokes and he brings a lot of self-mockery with him.

All in all, I had a great time with this series and I'm looking forward to the second season that has already been announced. Are you a fan of superhero series or do you like to watch a combination of action and humor? If yes, then I would definitely watch this series.
