“We’re so grateful to be continuing the story of Percy Jackson on Disney+. This third season will be new territory for the screen, bringing fan favorites like the Hunters of Artemis and Nico di Angelo to life for the first time,” Rick Riordan said in a statement Friday. “It’s a huge sign of commitment from Disney, and speaks volumes about the enthusiasm with which the fandom has embraced the TV show. Thank you, demigods worldwide!”
While this is an early renewal, it makes sense since Disney is likely looking to add more seasons to accommodate the ages of the series’ lead actors, Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri. Riordan has already expressed his desire to tell the story of each book in a single television season. With that in mind, long gaps could place the series in a scenario where the leads are much older than the characters they portray.
“From the moment Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted, it was clear this series had struck a chord with fans of all ages,” Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television, said in a statement. “With season two set to premiere this December, we’re thrilled to announce that Percy’s journey will continue with a third season. Huge thanks to our incredible cast and creative team, our partners at 20th Television, and our visionary and talented producers who continue to bring Rick Riordan’s world to life with such depth and imagination.”
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians performed quite well on Disney+, ranking in the top five most-watched original series on streaming the week it launched, according to Nielsen.
Season two follows Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood on a new adventure based on The Sea of Monsters. Production on season two wrapped in Vancouver in August.
The new season finds Percy Jackson returning to Camp Half-Blood a year later to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth changes, he learns he has a Cyclops brother, Grover goes missing, and the camp is under siege by the forces of Kronos. Percy’s quest to set things right takes him off-kilter and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret destiny awaits the son of Poseidon.
